Five held after 'cannabis café' raid

The suspected owner of a cannabis café was in custody last night after a series of raids designed at smashing the organised supply of the drug.

Police said Mike Allday, 43, was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of selling the Class C drug in the heavily fortified cafe in Freshbrook Road, Lancing.

He was being questioned last night along with a 39-year-old woman from Brighton. Both were arrested in Worthing.

Police also executed a warrant at the cannabis café and arrested three people on suspicion of supplying cannabis.

Officers used an angle grinder to gain access to the building and took three men – a 32-year-old, a 39-year-old and a 19-year-old, all from Worthing – into custody.

Warrants were also executed at homes in Worthing and Lancing.

Inspector Jason Wilson, of Sussex Police, led the operation. He said: “The raids have been a great success and we have arrested five people suspected of being involved in the supply of drugs in the local area.

“This crackdown is ongoing and we will continue to focus our efforts on those who think they can get away with committing drug-related crime.

“Our message to those offenders is simple – we will find out who you are and we will arrest you.” Chief Inspector James Asser, district commander for Adur, told The Argus: “We will continue to do all we can to disrupt the trade of drugs.”

It is the seventh time the café has been raided by officers since it opened for business in 2007.

During yesterday’s raid they removed one of the thick steel doors to gain access.

Police have repeatedly targeted the cannabis café and have, on occasions, gone to extreme lengths to try and arrest those inside.

They have used heavy duty equipment, including a tractor to tear down a wall. But only tiny quantities of cannabis have ever been recovered and only a handful of arrests made.

Police said last night the exact amount of cannabis recovered during the latest raids was unknown.

I haven't been affected and I dont really see the harm to be honest. Surely the police could be targeting dealers of drugs that are really dangerous & addictive? rather than wasting time money & resources on a bunch of stoners!

Me and my ever increasingly distant friend Spency P went in the cannabis cafe once, the egg and bacon was truly awful.

With food like that - they want locking up.

I heartily recomend the Wimpey in Horsham High St. Chicken chunks and chips with a Neopolitan sundae for under £15

do we think the ever increasing distance between friends may have something to do with the credit crunch? & why isnt the Argus covering this much more important story?

I would disagree abouth the wimpy being under £15, tha last time I went my weeks wages was spent £27.00

I dont earn a lot these days since I was kicked off the airwaves in 1993. After all who wants to watch repeats of TVS productions such as Number 73 or Art Attack?

The most disruption I have encountered is the police parking stupidly on the corner by the entrance to the cafe and a police woman trying to get herself killed by stepping out in front of my car having not been looking due to being engaged in heavy conversation with a fellow officer.

This is the 7th raid by the police and yet they still have not found any cannabis (well less than what can be found in any pub in the town and dare I say it even probably in the police canteen it's self) it seems to me that the police may have a grudge against someone who is running a fully legitimate business that only gives the illusion of being illegal, in part as a responce to the over the top police reaction.

Only two weeks ago the Beckley Foundation published a report for next year's UN drug policy review. This argued that because cannabis is so much safer than alcohol and tobacco, and that criminalising people for taking it causes more harm than the drug, it should be legalised and regulated, similar to the way alcohol is legal and regulated. The law currently makes people criminals for doing things to themselves which are safer than going to the pub. It's ridiculous.

The local residents should be complaining about the waste of their money by the police, hells teeth don't they have any real crime to fight?

Cannabis should be legalised and made a properly controlled drug, instead the police spend all this time and effort trying to support prohibition, which has created nothing but anarchy and which funds organised crime and terrorism.

You should all be very angry indeed.

I think the Police are trying to flex their muscles, and are using this raid as propaganda. I saw the recent news story where the slimy officer in charge was using the excuse of "there are children nearby playing". So children have X-Ray vision now do they? I think they should put their resources to good use and tackle the pandemic which is cocaine - which is going to cause the real problems for people now that we are heading into recession.

Another example of cops (and council staff) looking for ways to rack up over-time without actually achieving anything of merit! Alcohol causes more harm than cannabis ever did. Legalise cannabis NOW!

I believe the cannabis cafe is being victimised, another example of the Fascist state we now live in. Cannabis should be legalised along the lines of the Dutch model. Keep on toking.
