I was horrified to discover there is a plan to demolish Varndean College and build an objectionable modern building in its place, with the colossal expenditure and disruption involved (The Argus, October 30).

Varndean College is the perfect building for its imposing position.

It is elegant and formal but not dominating. It is the focal point of the whole landscape. How anyone could be barbarous enough to want to demolish it is beyond my understanding.

Surely, in these difficult financial times, it would be cheaper to extend it and modernise it?

Every few years it seems, there is another attempt to develop the site in some unsuitable way.

Isn’t it time to place some sort of preservation order on this marvellous site, to keep it safe and intact for future generations of students and all the people who live around it? We look at it every day and it is beautiful.
