Detectives investigating the death of an Arab student in a racially-motivated attack in Hastings have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with his murder.

Mohammed al-Majed, 16, from Qatar, died two days after suffering a serious head injury when he hit the pavement during a confrontation in August.

Mohammed, who was studying English in the town, was with friends close to the USA Fried Chicken and Kebab House, near the junction of Robertson Street and the A259 seafront road, when a row is said to have broken out.

Earlier this month Sussex Police said they had made a "significant breakthrough" in identifying a man at the scene of the attack, after studying many hours of CCTV footage along with witness statements.

A Sussex Police spokesman said a 21-year-old man from south London was arrested by officers at 9.30pm on Thursday.

He said: "The man was arrested on an aircraft which had arrived in the UK from Cyprus. He was taken to the Eastbourne custody suite where officers from the major crime branch will interview him in relation to the murder of Mohammed al-Majed."

Two other men have so far been charged in relation to the unrest that took place during the evening of August 22, although the charges are not specifically connected to Mohammed's death.

He was studying English at EF International Language Schools in White Rock, Hastings, and had been in the town for about five weeks.

His body was flown back to Qatar after he died at King's College Hospital, London
