A major supermarket has announced it is to double the size of one of its high street stores.

The Sainsbury’s Local branch in Western Road, Brighton, is to expand in January, the food giant has announced.

Shopping floor space is to increase from 1,800sqft to 3,000sqft, with more products and extra aisles planned.

The shop will take over part of nextdoor JJB Sports, which is now closed, and the front will be extended along Western Road.

Sainsbury’s has promised wider aisles and new internal signage, which will help customers to navigate the store more easily.

The expansion will also include two self-scan checkouts to cut queues.

Store manager Nathan Crombie said: “We think the extension and improvements to the store are great news for customers.

“It will feel bigger and it will be easier for customers to shop. With the new space we will be able to provide our customers with more choice and a bigger offer.”

The supermarket said it did not need planning permission for the extension because the former JJB sports shop was already being used for retail.

But a spokeswoman added that a minor application may be needed for changes to the shop front.

Sven Rufus, Green councillor for the Regency ward, said: “My first thought is that we do not want to see shops empty in the main shopping area so it is good that businesses want to move in.

“It is also good that the big four supermarkets are turning towards car-free shopping.

“But it also means they’re tightening their stranglehold on the high street.

“I would rather see a bit of diversity but it is better to see Sainsbury’s there than seeing the shop stand empty.”

Is the expansion good news for the area? Tell us below.

Oh goody, "the expansion will also include two self-scan checkouts to cut queues" - would those be the same sort of checkouts that we have in Lewes Road's branch? The ones that the manager told me are being discontinues because they're rubbish and keep breaking down? Can't wait.

so another big supermarket on western road, Waitrose, Sainsburys. I am putting my money on Tescos getting woolworths to make it the big three.

The current shop is horribly cramped and small, so it's no bad thing they're going to make it bigger.

Does this mean that Sainsbury's are finally admitting that they were WRONG to move out of Churchill Square?

The trouble with self-service checkouts is that most people spend longer serving themselves than it'd take for them to get served.

In Boots the other day 12 people got served in the time it took 2 people to scan their 5 items each.

The self-serve machines are a pain in the backside, particularly if there's any form of alcohol in your shopping, as by the time a supervisor has come over to check you're over 18 you might as well have queued along with everyone else.

Bloody supermarkets are everywhere. There must be over 10 in about a 5 mile radius. If it is not Sainsbury's getting bigger there are numerous Tesco Extra's, and god knows what else. Do we really need anymore to serve the communities?

I suppose it does give us choice!!

Isn't this Mitre House? Originally the Kearly & Tongue(sp?)food shop? Mitre was their brand name.
If so it looks as if the wheel is turning a full circle.

How common of you to utter the words (ahem) BEJAM. They were like Iceland but for even poorer people. On the subject of now deceased supermarkets here's mine from memory.

Fine Fare
Liptons
Gateway
Bejam's
Wavy Line
Presto
Hintons
Co-Op (foodstores)
Ash & Nephew
Somerfield (soon to rebranded (Tesco)

Having spoken to store manager Mason Crombles I think this is a great idea. There will be a bigger offer of some kind and also self scan checkouts which are sure to be GR8 4 SHRINKAGEZ.
