Heavy rain has caused flooding across Sussex, especially in the north of the county.

Earlier on today, the Met Office issued a flash warning in Sussex as the deluge continued and water levels kept rising.

Firefighters have been inundated with calls to floodings in cellars, basement flats and homes across the north of the county.

At the St George's Retreat care home in Ditchling, firefighters from Burgess Hill pumped around 8,000 litres of water from a cellar.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service service said the calls had been flooding in “non-stop” since 8.30am.

Drivers were warned to slow down on the roads and to avoid areas which had flooded.

By late afternoon the rain had begun to ease and the severe weather warning, expected to end at 3pm, was lifted by the Met Office.
