Brighton Centre revamp delayed

The £400million redevelopment of the Brighton Centre will not start until at least 2012 - the year it was supposed to open.

Two major conferences have been booked for 2011 and 2012, which will generate £5million for the city’s economy.

But Brighton and Hove City Council had hoped the new centre, which would be worth £30billion to businesses over 20 years, would open in the year of the London Olympics.

This is the second major delay to the redevelopment, after a previous start time of 2008 was not met.

With building work likely to take a minimum of two years, the decision to accept the 2012 GMB union conference indicates a rejuvenated Brighton Centre cannot open before 2014.

The delay to the Brighton Centre comes after a series of blows to major projects, including the demise of the £290million King Alfred scheme, setbacks for the Black Rock ice-rink and i360, and separate plans for Brighton Marina being shelved and rejected.

Tony Mernagh, executive director of Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership, said: “It is good news that the Brighton Centre is being put to good use while we wait for the redevelopment, but the redevelopment is increasingly a matter of urgency.”

Councillor Ted Kemble, cabinet member for major projects, said he could not confirm the development’s timetable.

He said: “This is a complex project involving many other partners so at the moment it’s not possible to give timescales for the development.

“Things are moving behind the scenes on the Brighton Centre.

“We hope to announce a major step forward in the next couple of weeks.

“Getting the Brighton Centre replaced with a state-of-the-art convention centre is a top priority.”

I saw the Human League in the Brighton Centre last month, and I didn't see anything wrong with it! Why does it need redeveloped anyways?

Well any chances of getting and Olympic money is clearly out in the sea now... the Council need to put the people who put them in office before putting themselves first.... seems like they are trying to feather their own nests for a bit longer... well bring on the election as none of them are getting back in... we will remember when you come begging for votes, that's if you even bother.

No suprise we are falling way behind other emerging world class cities. the city is a mess now god knows what it will be like in 2012, what a disgrace for any visitors. we have the wonderful lanes and north laine and arty culture, but the council let us down with a shabby seafront and dirty disgusting city centre, badly implemented road schemes and a lack of street planting and paving. the previous labour administration only managed to give us the terraces development by the pier and what a eyesore that is. come on tories give us future iconic buildings and facilities. as for ted kemble the taxi driver in charge of major developments, you just have to look at his ward where hove lagoon has sat and rots over several years, with a skate park being the final nail in its coffin. hove lagoon used to be vibrant and beautiful, now it is grey dirty littered and decayed, no more concrete please, come on pull your fingers out.

All the tree-huggers, the yuppies from London and the stuck in the Dark Ages do nothing gang, have done a great job in bringing this City to a standstill. Elected councilors have also contributed to the do nothing culture, whilst wetting their beaks on vast expenses. In short this City has been put back 20 years by the people who can't see no further than the end of their noses.

...and just where do you lot think the money is coming for all the grandiose plans you have?

Are you willing to pay for it through higher taxes? ...Nah didn't think so! But I bet you are happy for others to!

Money makes the world go around...and the UK just stopped dead in its tracks....get used to years (yes years) of decay and decline as we ALL pay for the disgraceful excesses of the last 10 years of boom which has now turned to bust!

Every day brings news of another business failed...be glad you have jobs...because a lot soon won't.

Oh and Dave...it doesn't matter who you vote for..the Lib/Lab Con...is just that one big Con!

Brighton once again does what it is good at - sticking well and truly in the 19th Century. Every chance of modernising the place falls, either killed off by short-sighteed councillors or run aground by inept delayed decisions. When is someone going to grab this city by the short anc curlies and sort it out?!

Surely the fact that £5 million has been generated for the city's economy is good news?

At last, we're beginning to get some real feedback on the effects of the "rent a mouth" brigade who have helped to bring this once fine City to a standstill. Let us kill the myth that we are a Regency city. We are NOT, we have many fine examples of Regency, Georgian, Victorian architecture. We have lost the opportunity to make this an exciting city. The current council are not worthy of our support and I long for the opportunity to evict them via the ballot box.

Puuuurlease. It was bad enough having to listen to years of unknowledgable people embarass themselves by whining on about Falmer when they clearly didn't have a clue.

Now the best you can come up with is that yes work has started but it will never be finished!

Pathetic.

Ridiculous!
The council seems intent on creating a development dark age.
I was in Edinburgh recently (a world heritage site) - and the development and progression there is the polar opposite of whats going on here. The Tories wouldn't even allow an approved development in the idyllic splendour of the marina. It really is nice there - Prague-esque. Idiots...
No developer with any sense will be touching Brighton for a long time.
We (the disgruntled), need to make sure that they're not allowed to remain in power. Vote them out at the next opportunity.

I think you've got a hidden agenda because your discription of Hove Lagoon is way off. I've taken my children there over a dozen times during the last summer and it's ALWAYS been clean and well maintained. It's got a fantastic playground and the paddling pool is superb with its soft rubber floor and cleaniness. A great little cafe combined with the skate park for older children. People like you are never happy unless there's someone there to wipe your backside !!!

The Brighton Center and Churchill Square shopping mall are the two erections in the city that should be pulled down and redesigned by a good architect. The shopping mall must be the worst in the country. What is happening to Brighton and Hove?

So Edinburgh is great then with lots of lovely development...I wonder why that is?

Lets see:-
A Scottish Prime Minister
A Scottish Chancellor
Big Loans to bail out mainly Scottish run Banks (HBOS/RBS),
A Scottish Parliament that cost tens of millions to build,
Free prescriptions in Scotland,
A local government settlement that gives more £ per head to Scotland than England.

Hmmmm...I wonder where our cash is going and why there's none left down here? Nah...no idea! Beats me! Any ideas?
