Wind turbines for Tesco car park in Shoreham

Tesco is to install two 10m wind turbines in one of its superstore car parks.

Adur District Council has approved the plan for the shopping giant to erect the energy generators at the Holmbush Centre in Shoreham.

Power from the six kilowatt turbines, which each have six blades mounted on a steel column, will be fed directly into the store.

The council received nine letters from nearby residents objecting fearing the turbines would increase noise pollution and affect views across the car park to the South Downs area of outstanding national beauty.

Ita all GREENwash, these supermarkets only care about the bottom line, the profit.

They often mention when they want to open a new store the jobs THEY are creating and the Councils ALWAYS accept the figures without thinking of the local shops closed on the high street, the family businesses closed, bankrupt

Same goes for this GREEN rubbish - these turbines normally rust/breakdown before they ever cause a return on CO2 used in its production/early life

You need to do some research! The don't rust, they RARELY break down. Maybe in the days of old, but not now.

Jeez, go away.

The store already exists, so i's not like they're taking more business away from other existing stores, reducing their energy costs will make the store more resilient to the effects of the recession, thus making it less likely that they'll need to make redundancies and micro-generation is going to become more and more important, especially now that other countries supply the majority of our energy supplies.

You didn't really spend much time thinking before you starting typing, did you?

well Tesco could share some of their green energy with M&S and Maccies, gain some much needed positive PR. Seems like a harmless enough idea, no locals to complain about the "noise" go for it Mr T!

To interociter
My point was that people believe the press releases without thought or question.
I do know the shops been open for ages - but thanx for stating the obvious!

I do know that the swathes of turbines in Spain are slowly slowing down, not producing much electricity and need to be replaced (well before their intended life spans)

I'll also point out that these supermarkets just LOVE to have photos of their senior managers in front of some waste recycling project with their eco cars, and then jump in their Bentleys to get to their private jets

PS Can any green mug explain why the UK was so warm in Roman times we had vinyards in Northern Scotland (still not warm enough for that even NOW!)- all those planet destroying , gas guzzzzling Range Rovers? ;-)

Tye, no-one can explain it. The trouble with the green issue is people jumping on band wagons and defending themselves instead of learning about the issues. The only way forward is to gain more knowledge. People don't like to be argued with or proved wrong, but to be proved wrong is to learn something.

On a practical note, do they even have room? We went there at Christmas and drove round and round to find parking as it was packed. How many spaces will they lose for this?

But it is a good idea, especially with rising costs.

Oh please - like looking across a carpark is the best way to view an area of outstanding natural beauty! If the view was that good or the impact that severe, the store would have never have been built. NIMBYism at its worst.

Any one notice how many times shops and other places of business are now starting to ask for proof of age and ID to purchase normal everyday items?

Even pensioners are being stopped from buying a bottle of wine unless they can prove that they are over 25 years of age.

Communist Labour is trying to force their deeply unpopular National ID cards down the throats of law abiding British people who don't want them, don't like them and won't apply for them.

It's time that Communist Labour were banned from standing for elected office, banned from teaching in our schools and banned from being members of trade unions.

Communist Labour are even sending their spies into our churches to check that vicars and priests aren't preaching against Communist Labour policies.

It is a shame and a disgrace that the Tories and the Lib Dems who proclaim that they are liberal and democratic parties will sit in government with Communist Labour, join in coalition with them and even sit with them on the boards of community organizations.

Communist Labour have gotten away with their communist infiltration for too long. They have used policial correctness and health & safety to weasel their nasty communist labour way of life in to every aspect of our lives.

It is time to get Communist Labour out of Britain.

what are you on about, you loon? this is a story about wind turbines. anyway, the only people who do not want i.d cards are the ones with something to hide. if you think that people don't want them, then there must be an awful lot of dodgy people about. most european countries have id cards, and then manage to do without passports, except for coming to england, where we insist on them. id cards are needed to maintain our borders, and make movement easier, not harder.

Typical quality of comments on this site, half complaining just for the sake of complaining, several others using it to grind some irrelevant political axe.

Post 2 (CornishSeagull) was fantastic though. More like this.

No news on Iceland buying up the Woolies store in Boundary Road then.... well it's not really news is it.

What about the free entry in Airbourne in Eastbourne this year then, 48000 people paid to get in last year and it was a flop, traders said they would boyctt this years show if there was a charge...

It's all the sort of news we want to hear, not Tesco's windfarm.

I think the turbines are good, they will distract motorists speeding on that nasty bend on the A27 at the rear of Tesco. They will then have accidents and the council will be forced to install speed cameras on this very nasty stretch of road.

Saw the BBC news this morning where the young Tory guy dresses up as the lost child Maddie - It was reported that he had been thrown out of the Tory party along with two other extremists - scary how one of them was a guy who dared questioned the Climate Change /global warming view that is generally accepted

Blimey, science takes a back sear to the "currently accepted view" that MUST be believed - no deviation is allowed -
as was global cooling in the 1970/80s and the flat earth people a few hundred years before

The more things change, the more things remain the same eh?

What? "the flat earth people a few hundred years before"?
Tye, the ancient Greeks new the earth was spherical: Aristotle proved it in about 330BC and Eratosthenes calculated its circumference about a century later. I'd hardly call that a few hundred years ago.
Did you actually go to school?
