A landmark fire station will be sold to make way for a £4 million replacement.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has revealed it plans to sell Brighton's Preston Circus Fire Station, built in 1938.
Senior officers say the fire station is outdated and too expensive to maintain.
They are currently looking for possible sites for a new station but none has yet been agreed upon. Assistant chief fire officer Gary Walsh, from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire authority is looking for opportunities to improve the facilities for the personnel on the stations, particularly in Brighton and Hove."
He said the service was also planning to replace Newhaven fire station because it was too small for its needs.
Mr Walsh said any replacement for the Preston Circus station would have the same number of fire appliances and there were currently no plans to alter the crews.
