‘Antisocial’ Worthing anglers will be reeled in

Anglers face being banned from fishing from much of a pier after blood and stinking fish guts damaged people’s clothing.

Councillors are planning the crackdown on Worthing Pier after repeated complaints about fishermen’s antisocial habits.

But the move is likely to spark uproar among anglers of all ages who cast their rods from the decking.

Chris Bradley, the borough council’s foreshore manager, said: “For several years now it has become apparent that a problem is escalating on the pier as a result of fishing activities.

“The main concerns are that fishermen leave their rods across the deck, which makes it difficult for walkers to pass.

“Fishermen overcast while the public are sitting in deckchairs. They cut up fish to use as bait on deckchair stacks.

“The blood then runs through the stacks, which in turn gets on people’s clothes. The remains of the fish gut are left on the decks and starts to smell, which leads to complaints from the public, the coffee shop owners and deckchair concessionaire.”

Mr Bradley said the pier was patrolled up to four times a day by foreshore inspectors but when they left, problems started up again.

He said: “The police have been called on several occasions to deal with persistent offenders as well as antisocial behaviour by youths throwing fish around and using foul language.

In 2006 new signage was put in place concerning rules for fishing, the removal of rubbish, cleaning the area when leaving, overhead casting, and “no fishing” areas to allow for the passage of boats under the pier.

“These signs had to be replaced some weeks later through vandalism.

The estimated cost for the new signs is £1,250.”

Mr Bradley said only the landing stage should now be used for fishing with the exception of two bays for disabled anglers on the decking near the end of the pier nightclub. In addition, a £6,000 security camera and tannoy system may be installed to deter tombstoning – jumping from the pier.

But Mike Perfect, who runs Prime Angling fishing tackle shop in Brighton Road, Worthing, said: “It’s the few who are spoiling it for the majority.

“I help organise night fishing competitions on the pier for Worthing Sea Anglers’ Association. One of the rules is you don’t leave litter.

“But the casual anglers are their own worst enemies.

“I cannot complain about the council’s actions. It has been coming for ages. I have been trying to educate people that they cannot do what they do on the pier without the council reacting.”

Mr Perfect hoped he could negotiate with the council to ensure future competitions could still go ahead from the decking.

If their rods are blocking the decks, just kick em into the sea!

I am a keen angler, im 17 and am hot on the topic. I fish in Newhaven and have similar problems with local people who think they own the show.
I starte campaign which is failing in publicity as most people laugh at me. It is/was about dealing with your tackle and trying to get people to take home their rubbish.

I was disgusted when a middle aged man said that wont stop anything and threw his rubbish bag into the sea to prove a point in front of his son.

I am always polite to the public and will talk nicely ensuring that i do not appear to be a threat and move my equipment out the way so they can pass. It is not too much hassle. If other people cant do this then they shouldnt be fishing.

Its people like that that give all other anglers a bad reputation.

Son of a beach, about time! Fishing on the pier - it's off-fish-shell-y over. The sooner the batter if you ask me. I’m so happy I could dance the conger.

Alright, truthfully? I’ve not actually been to Worthing Pier, but minnow what them people are like. They’re all the same wherever you go, just perch-ed at the end of the pier with their rods. “Hey, Mr Fisherman… fin-ish what you're doing & get your skate-s on... go on... on your pike... but be sure to give us a wave as you leave”. Ok… ok… that’s eely below the belt.

Now some of you might be saying to yourselves “Leon, whilst I’m impressed with the ar-ray of fish knowledge there’s no need to be a fish-etious bass-tard, there’s a time and a plaice for comments like this. Stop trying to mussel in on their turf… the pier is for everyone’s enjoyment so don’t be so shellfish…”

I bet some of you are think my comments are carp! Bare in mind though that I didn’t make you read this far… and if you’re going to waste your precious time you might as well fillet with something good.

It might sand like I’m running out of ideas, starting to clam up if you will – floundering… but believe me I’ve got yachts & yachts more. Oh my cod – I could go on all day but the truth is… I’ve haddock with fish puns!

To everyone except ‘Bibble’ from London – PEACE TROUT!

Canoe guys think of any more?

I really enjoy angling, it's a great way to get away from all the miserable blighters in the world. Why anyone would want to go fishing on worthing pier I have no idea. All those miserable old women, grumbling and moaning all the time, the horrible stench of stewed tea and burnt buns from the so-called coffee shops, what a way to spoil something that's supposed to be enjoyable. There's a blooming great big long beach at Worthing, why doesn't everyone go and fish there? Worthing Pier is well fitted out with geriatric traps, honestly, put a deck chair up and within a couple of minutes you'll snare yourself and moaning, senile OAP, use 'em as bait that's the way to do it!
