A student is on course to become part of a school’s history.
George Weller has an offer to study at Cambridge if he achieves the required A-level grades this summer.
The 17-year-old was one of three students from Kingsford Community School in East London to win a free boarding place at Brighton College.
The tough London school’s unique link with Brighton College allows gifted pupils a chance to study away from the distractions of the highcrime area.
Banking giant HSBC funded the scholarship, worth £7,500 a term.
George came to Brighton in September, 2007, and is now hoping to become part of Kingsford Community School history as the first student to go to Cambridge.
Richard Cairns, headmaster of Brighton College, said it was a great achievement.
He added: “Most students at Kingsford go straight into work or the local college.”
George said: “I need to keep working hard because my place is not guaranteed.
“My tutors have been really helpful in advising me and guiding me.
“At my last school I had not thought about applying to Cambridge but now I have to make sure I get the grades.”
George wants to study natural science and biology at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
He has been made an offer conditional on him gaining three As and one C at A-level.
He said: “I really did want to come here two years ago. I just felt it was somewhere I could do well. I think coming to Brighton College really has influenced my life.”
Joan Deslandes, headteacher at Kingsford School, said: “We are absolutely delighted to hear of George’s success and also proud that his fellow students are doing so well too.
“Their experience proves that dedication, commitment and hard work really can make a difference.”
