Homeless man dumped in dustcart after sleeping in bin

A homeless man was thrown into the back of a dustcart when he bedded down for the night in a wheelie bin.

He was sleeping in a bin in Queen’s Place, off London Road, Brighton, when it was collected by Veolia Environmental Services at 4.50am yesterday.

The container was pulled thirty yards down the road and hooked onto the back of a truck.

The crew only realised a man was inside when they tipped the rubbish into the cart.

A spokesman for Veolia said: “The crew immediately hit the emergency red stop button preventing any machinery inside being activated and pulled the man clear.”

Police and paramedics were called and the man was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital with a bang on the head.

But if he were 15 and pregnant, he'd have been given his own home - with its own wheelie bin.

Imagine if the crusher had been activated. What a terrifying situation to be in.

i presume was a communal wheelie bin and not a little green one...

maybe they should be converted into flats for the homeless, or maybe the council should send them all up north where there is plenty of housing, and drugs are cheaper but they are obviously not that desperate.

This is taking recycling a bit too far !! They should have put his clothes in a different bin to his shoes etc.

For goodness sake. This is his own fault, really. You can't expect binmen to have to look inside EVERY bin to make sure it doesn't have a person in it!

Today's method of dealing with the homeless is brought to you by the letter B... for bin. (Cut to shot of Big Bird falling into a mountain of trash.)

Bloke probably has TB anyway, a kind end to a miserable life. Just make sure it wasnt that ED somebody or other that used to be homeless now makes a nice living talking about it!

I bet he was surprised as rubbish collection in Brighton & Hove leaves a lot to be desired. He probably thought he could live in the bin undisturbed for weeks!! SHAME on the bin men, now he's homeless again.

Sad to see the majority of comments were either making jokes or blaming the poor guy. Considering how many homeless people are attacked on the street by violent drunks and/or chavs, a bin at 4:30am - not exactly a time when you'd expect the bin to be emptied - is safer. Not to mention the fact that many homeless people are mentally ill or have addictions, and so aren't exactly rational thinkers.
