Fears over hotel scheme for ice rink in Brighton

The sale of a former city centre ice rink to developers planning a six-storey hotel has been condemned by neighbours.

Brighton and Hove City Council is to sign a deal with an unnamed developer for the Sussex Ice Rink in Queen Square, Brighton, and neighbouring offices.

The proposal includes an 85-room hotel and restaurant, as well as a new pedestrian and bike route connecting the current culdesac with St Nicholas churchyard.

But neighbours, park users and ward councillors have reacted angrily to the move.

Shaun Kiddell, of the St Nicholas Green Spaces Association, said: "We are keen not to stand in the way of progress, but strongly oppose the latest scheme for a five or six-storey hotel.

Former Labour councillor and neighbour Francis Tonks added: "We are concerned about the lack of consultation."

Green councillors said the proposals may be too ambitious for the site.

A council spokesman said residents would be consulted during the planning process.

With no local parking or vehicle access to drop off bags or people let alone no interesting views like the seafront based ones this will end up as another budget hotel, is this really what we want in the centre of our town?

no vehicle access to drop of bags, what rubbish, the road is currently used as a taxi rank, taxis I'm sure are capable of dropping of people and bags, and it's hardly a long walk for vistors arriving by train now is it? Also there is the Church road NCP car park and Churchill Square car parks very very close by, so a complete load of tosh complaining about that!

And also, it's not going to be a budget hotel but 4 star plus, with views over St Nicholas and down to the sea from the upper floors, so more tosh from you.

No doubt the nimbys from St Nicholas Green Spaces don't want buildings spoiling THEIR views as it's not going to be built on any current green space, it's a brown field development!

The investment is needed - it creates jobs - people seem to find this hard to understand sometimes

This scheme is terrible cos it would cast this lovely park onto deep shade, wipe out at least 4 rare mature Elm trees. The new access path/ cycle way could look more like a road and would destroy the listed boundary walls and disturb people buried. It seems the idea of the path will only benefit hotel guests as a short cut to the station and NCP. The current proposal poses a great threat to the churchyard and it is somewhat ironic that this latest scheme comes from the body responsibility of safeguarding and protecting this popular open space, Brighton and Hove Council!

The area does need updating but a hotel?? I don't think we need another one, why don't we get something a little nicer. Plus having an ice rink was good although quite small, why get rid a it? Think the ideas should be re-looked at and find something better.

Just a thought, but the recent 'unfortunate' fire seems to have occurred at just the right time 'eh?
