A controversial seafront cycling experiment is likely to begin this spring.

Worthing Borough Council has pencilled in April or May for the start of a test to see whether bicycles and pedestrians can mix without mishap on the town s promenade.

But critics warned an unsegregated free for all between Splash Point and George V Avenue could be a recipe for disaster.

A council report said: "There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to a consultation exercise, with some 86% supporting the principle of cyclists being permitted to use the promenade."

But Lib Dem councillor Bob Smytherman called for a clearly laid out cycle lane, claiming that a mix of bikes and pedestrians could be very dangerous.

A cycle lane between the Lido and George V Avenue was scrapped after a speeding cyclist ploughed into a woman day tripper, leaving her with brain damage.

The accident happened outside the lane, but the council was forced to pay out more than £100,000 in damages to the victim.

More recently, a segregated lane was established on the seafront between Brooklands and Splash Point.
