A failed asylum-seeker was jailed for hawking fake DVDs.
Quan Xie, who lives in Lewisham, south-east London, was carrying 124 Disney DVDs when he was arrested by police in York Hill, Brighton, on Thursday.
Xie, 36, admitted breaching the Trademarks Act 1994 at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning.
Lucinda Dore, defending, said Xie committed the crime to get money to send to his family in China.
She told magistrates he has been living in Britain since 2006 and has debts of £50,000.
His application for asylum has been turned down and he is waiting to be deported back to China.
Xie had one previous conviction for the same crime.
Jailing Xie for four weeks, presiding magistrate Michael Colquhoun said: “The harm that is caused by this sort of offence is loss to the legal right holder.”
