Three day Beachdown hearing to start

Officials will decide this week whether to give a major music festival the go ahead.

A three-day hearing about the licence for the Beachdown Festival starts at Mid Sussex District Council's offices in Oaklands Road, Haywards Heath, on Monday at 10.30am.

Organisers have already named headline acts including Grace Jones, The Zutons and Super Furry Animals to appear before of a crowd of more than 10,000 at Beachdown, which is planned to be held at Devil's Dyke Farm, near Brighton, on August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival ran for the first time last year.

Some villagers in nearby Fulking and Poynings have raised concerns with the council about traffic, noise and safety. Others have written to support the event.

It's about time that licences were done away with. A handful of self-important councillors of the nimby variety voting on something that 10,000 want to attend is undemocratic.

No it isn't undemocratic. Brighton and Hove has a population of apporoximately of approximately 250,000. Now if 10,000 people (1/25th of the population of the city) want a festival, they should have to obtain a licence for it. The huge majority NOT attending may not want it.
Personally, I like the idea of it. But you talk such rubbish on every subject I'm not going to let you get away with it. Especially as YOU DON'T LIVE HERE!

I hope the Officials reject the application for the 'Beachdown Festival'.

Beachdown illegal drugs festival would be a more apt name. And I wonder how many of the 10,000 proposed attendees will be residents of Brighton & Hove? I suspect the majority will be interlopers like the odious Bibble.

I went last year, the weather wasn't great but hopefully they'll get a license and it will better this year. Couldn't find any illegal drugs though

The whole large events needs to be looked at as whole.
For those who live near the roads that come into Brighton it can be a nightmare during the summer time, there is the Brighton festival, cycle ride, Fatboy Slim, Gaypride, etc You end up being trapped in you home most weekends

That's talent with one L, clever dick. It seems that spelling and punctuation aren't talents of yours. Go to the back of the class!

My biggest problem with festivals (and I go to them) is the sheer mess that people make, it's outrageously bad. Most only do it becauset they can and someone will clear it up. And it hurts to think that for a couple of days 10,000 people will treat the South Downs like a rubbish tip. From my view the solution is simple, festival organisers tell everyone to clear up themselves or it doesn't happen again.

Although that assumes the organiser would put the needs of the landscape and other users of the Downs before financial gain.......

*sigh*

Enjoy your squallor peeps, you always do. Funny how most people don't live in the same squallor at home (well, I've seen some real sh!t pits at times...)

TALENTLESS SQUALOR!
There seems to be a superfluity of Ls here today. VIZ TIP: Save time typing unnecessary letters by learning to spell.

Well if you put some of your funds into the football stadium, you would then be able to have a hospitality suite, when the stadium is loaned out for concerts

I wouldn't bother, edspells. It's never going to be built.

Why are they advertising, getting artists under contract, selling tickets - when they don't have license?
In some ways I hope they don't get one, and that everyone sues them to kingdom come.
Get the legal stuff sorted. THEN sell tickets.

Beachdown are taking a very proactive role on that matter with the Leave No Trace ethos and taking responsibilites for providing recycling bags/litter collectors/picking up every single ciggy butt etc... policing it is the hard part of course as you mention, all depends on the people that turn up.

Nothing new here... standard practice for just about any event in the country.

Council officers like to see full programmes, and that normally involves explicit details for certain music events so they know what type of crowd it will draw, and with this what extra precautions are needed.

That's partyly my point though, it's not the organiser's fault if they provide sufficient facilities for people to dispose of their refuse, it's the thin veneer of socialisation that some people have. The problem lies really with the people attending and it's disgraceful how many festival sites are treated, in fact calling them refuse tips would be suggesting that they have at least some order and system!

I guess the thing that gets me is that some people think it's ok to chuck whatever they have on them on to the ground, wherever they are, and not bat an eyelid on the premise that someone else will do it for them. It's lazy.

If the place is kept relatively clean, I see no problem :) I'm not a kill joy, I just care.

Ok, I'm removing my beak hehe.
