Walk-out threat in Brighton and Hove schools' pay row

More than 200 teaching assistants and school support staff could strike after being left out of a £37 million equal pay deal which sees other workers being given up to £25,000 each.

There was anger among women staff at faith schools in Brighton and Hove yesterday as they found out they had not been included in Brighton and Hove City Council plans for a one-off payout to compensate women who had been paid less than men.

Cheques for up to £25,000 have been offered to hundreds of council employees, including teaching assistants, cleaners and office staff at about three quarters of the city's state schools.

Their counterparts at the remaining quarter, the 15 Catholic and Church of England junior and primary schools and Cardinal Newman Catholic School, the largest secondary in the city, have been left out.

The council said they were omitted on a legal technicality because although it provides most of their funding, the governing bodies of faith schools officially employ the workers.

The council said staff at schools directly employed by them had been able to claim compensation because they could argue they were not paid equally in comparison with men with similar skills working in other departments, notably binmen.

In most faith school cases there is no such comparison.

The only male staff they can compare their wages with would be teaching assistants who are largely paid the same.

This is very unfair i work in faith school as a TA and not getting any pay out.I work the same hours , the same job and i'm paid by the council each mth but yet i'm being excluded from it. Thought the council worked within the equal pay system. This is NOT equal pay.

A very unhappy overworked TA

Some faith schools want to keep their distance to maintain unequal admission and employment opportunities. The Government has launched an inquiry into these issues. We should not blame staff who are the innocent victims here, but a system that is socially divisive and 'plays the system' to suit religious ends, should look at itself here, and not blame the council.

We should be campaigning for an equal, good standard of education for all the children. Even staff would benefit, won't they?

Perhaps if the council could take over St. Mary's and provide the East part of Brighton with the so much missed and needed local school, it would sort out so many of the actual education problems.

The council would pay out if these assistants came from schools of any faith other than Christianity.
The mere mention of Islam, Judaism, Buddhism etc and the council would be handing out cash, holding special faith sharing days even in all the city's schools.
There would be processions for children in fancy dress while they sang prayers from other faiths.
Actually....does this already happen?
