Free electric bike if you move to St James' Street eco-complex

An eco-complex where residents of each of 34 flats will be given an electric bike to ride has been granted planning permission.

The four storey beige block, with brightly coloured panels and a roof clad in solar panel material, will be built in St James's Street, Brighton, above a proposed new Tesco Express store on the corner of Dorset Gardens.

The street level walls will be decorated with panels featuring artwork by residents of the area.

Members of Brighton and Hove City Council's planning committee last night (Wednesday, March 18) voted unanimously to approve the scheme.

They were told the Tesco Express plans had been delayed because changes were being made to the planned appearance of the store.

The shop, which will take over the old Bewise and Superdrug branches, was originally due to open in January.

The flats will replace an eyesore single storey building above the store.

The developers Boho Green will be required to contribute £44,945 towards schools, £22,700 for transport infrastructure, £25,000 for public art and £57,521 to public outdoor recreation space.

Excellent news for the area, I looked at the plans months ago, they are stunning compared to the sh*t building that is currently there!

Thank goodness for common sense quality development and let's hope Tesco don't try wriggling out of their responsabilies like the bronze framed windows that conveniently went missing at the express store in Hove, or the flint front wall that got lost in Church Rd - Tosco scumbags!!!

TESCO? IN ST JAMES STREET?

HOW DARE THEY TRY AND DEVELOPMENT A SKANKY PART OF TOWN RIGHT ON THE DOOR STEP OF A FEW FAILING BUSINESSES WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN COMPLAIN ABOUT STARBUCKS.

eco-bikes?

Green appear to be the "new black"

I still recall the scare of Global Cooling from a few years ago and am to cynical to believe that the Scientists know everything today and were stupid yesterday - because yesterday they said they knew everything ......

Tye, I thinks yours is a classic case of a member of the the general public completely failing to understand any one of the issues involved in climatic change. The 'scares' that you recall were generated solely by the tabloid press and by people who do not understand the issues, primarily because they are too stupid to have done any reading and research on the matter, and because they do not understand basic scientific concepts.
Don't let yourself fall into the same trap of thinking that you know what you're talking about, because it is clear that you are just repeating the ignorant ramblings of the greatly uninformed flat-earthers, tabloid-readers and cranky pot-head conspiracy theorists.

And you believe the current scare

In real life I have to keep quiet about my cynicism as its the "established view" - I'm just SO OLD that I know within a few decades all established views are seen through - I hope you see it too and remember me

i'm only concerned that only "pro global change due to man" climatologists are being funded, the other side (which despite the spin is LARGE) is considered loony and not funded

On a completely different track 0 why do you think we have to reduce CO2 by 80% by 2050 and even that ex Vice Presidents film admitted that CO2 is only higher than the 14th Century by around 30/40%
Is it part of the Global Conspiracy to keep the common herd scared and in their place - queue spooky music :)
AND believe it or not I recycle, buy quality stuff that lasts years and years , I don't fly, and try and buy locally just because its common sense

Where will 34 electric bikes be Parked/or stored for those who don't or can't ride one?

Why do you need an electric bike? I thought the whole idea about bike riding is that you used your own energy.
I can't see the point of this at all - apart from it being a SALES GIMMICK.

A beige block... with brightly coloured panels... panels featuring artwork...

Who'd live in a house like this? I'm sure it'll look great, for a while at least.

It reminds me of when they built flats above what was the St. James's St Co-op when it closed (to become The Tin Drum and er, the Co-op). The hoardings advertised 9 flats - 50% with sea views.

Well actually they thought about that in the design would you believe, there is a large built in cupboard specifically marked on the plans, just inside the front door of each flat for storage of the bike!!!!!!!!!!! That's prob why they got permission!

Mind you, it is a very very nice looking building, not as crappy as you might think! I'd suggest you go look at the plans online at Brighton Councils website, it'll be one of the nicest buildings on St James Street!!!

Electric bikes 'eh, what crank is peddling that idea then? 34 bikes, that's a whole chain of them then!
Who's handling them? and will some mug be saddled with their maintenance?, a sort of head charger, they'll soon tyre of that and dump their gear, probably inna tube! Tesco is involved I see, oh well, Every little helps

great idea, but surely £23,000 for transport infrastructure and £57,000 should be put in to the city pot for a park and ride and the king alfred leisure centre, rather than locally where the transport is already excellent and it has the huge queens park. surely all developments should put into a pot where facilities are already good, to help the whole city or this money will just get frittered for the sake of it. mary mears whats your comment.

Free bikes? Is this the only way they can sell flats without car parking then?

I'm with Tye - half this global warming debate is driven by self-serving scientists, most of whom couldn't work their way out of a brown paper bag.....
I'm in favour of a common sense approach to preserving the environment but not all this hair shirt stuff.

For an eco building you would think they would give free eco bikes - using pedal power not electricity.
