Sussex's first case of swine flu in Sussex has been recorded in Brighton and Hove.

A patient who had recently returned from America was treated by doctors in Brighton, the Health Protection Agency confirmed today (Sunday).

Tom Scanlon, director of public health for NHS Brighton and Hove, said: "The new case concerns an adult who recently returned from America and displayed mild symptoms.

"The individual is now recovering at home."

The Sussex case was one of 11 new cases added to the national total, which last night stood at 133.

On Saturday morning the World Health Organisation estimated there had been a total of 12,022 cases of the A(H1N1) flu, with 86 deaths.

Of those, 75 were recorded in Mexico, where the outbreak began in April.

The Sussex case follows a series of scares.

A woman was cleared of having the infection after returning from Mexico and walking into her Newhaven GP’s surgery with flu-like symptoms.

Chef Gabriel Gutierez tested negative after falling ill following a trip to Mexico, his home country.

NHS workers in Sussex have been given extra training on how to contain the spread of the virus.

Dr Scanlon said NHS Brighton and Hove and West Sussex Primary Care Trust are working closely with the HPA.

A detailed risk assessment is being carried out and advice prepared for whether any other individuals need to be investigated or given anti-viral treatment as a result of contact with someone who is confirmed as having swine flu.

Anyone with concerns about swine flu is asked to call the Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1513513.

Further information is also available on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk.

Doctors are advising people with flu-like symptoms to stay at home and contact their GP, or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice.

They should stay at home and are asked not to visit their GP in case they spread the virus to others.
