Wildlife rescuers break up seagull fight

THE UK Border Agency had to call wildlife rescuers after a fight broke out between rival species of gulls.

Volunteer rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) attended Newhaven Harbour at about 9pm on Saturday after a gull chick fell from one roof, leading to a fight between neighbouring herring gulls and blackbacked gulls on another roof housing harbour offices.

Staff at the UK Border Agency found a black-backed gull chick in a drainage channel on the flat roof, where it would have died if left. Herring gull and black-backed gull chicks are difficult to tell apart. Agency staff had moved the chick to a neighbouring flat roof where the herring gulls were nesting and a fight broke out.

Rescuers had a difficult job getting the chick back to the top of the 35ft building it had fallen from but it was reunited with its parents by 10.30pm.

To make a donation to WRAS, go to www.wildlifeambulance.org or send a donation to East Sussex WRAS, PO Box 2148,

Another non story by the argus. Should of left it and let nature take its course, most birds will regect it if it had come into contact with people

why not leave them alone why must time and effort be wasted, foisting unwanted attention upon some of natures vermin who did not ask to be interfered with, and will only contribute by Cr**ping over everything
follow the italian method of pest control, if it squaks, shoot it

I fully agree, if it wakes me up or cr*ps over anything I own then the best answer is extermination (one of my neighbours used to have a cockerel until it died in strange circumstances with the help of a bullet!).

Crap on Newhaven Harbour offices? The building is complete heap of junk and an eyesore in any case. Arriving there from the neat and tidy port at Dieppe is an embarassment - the attitude of the immigration and security officials is worse, tucked up in their ancient shed.
Crap on the place? it needs bombing, and by more than a bit of seagull poop.
It'll flop to the floor sometime and snooty fox will get him.

I reckon the seagull was only making a comment, long over due.
Doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a round from a .22 though!

Some less informed people regard Gulls as vermin - they are not - they have legal protection. If the scavnge, it is largely because of the waste some human vermin leave behind them!

Unquote

Not entirely true as the ones that nest on our garage feed their young almost entirely on 'natural' food, mostly cuttlefish.
True and I agree that humans leave behind a lot of refuse, especially as even in seaside towns in the UK, they often insist on leaving rubbish in flimsy plastic bags. I suppose they are scavengers, which ecologically can be no bad thing.
The eyesore of the harbour buildings is an entirely human created mess.

But it's much more fun to use a 303 or a 357 round and watch the gull explode in lots of different pieces!.

What a pathetic and ignorant animal-hating bunch some of you Brightonians are. You're an embarrassment to the town with some of the pathetic comments you make. Why don't you do something more interesting for a change and get a life.

The ignorance of some of these comments astounds me. There are 5 times more puffins in the UK than gulls but do you "hate " them? No and the reason is that we haven't destroyed their habitat (yet) nor have we encouraged them into our towns with our slovenly, throw away lifestyle. East Sussex WRAS does a fantastic job with ALL our wildlife and if you don't like seabirds don't live in a seaside town!! Gulls are intelligent and fascinating creatures and deserve our affection not condemnation

Wow! The last time I hear such nasty comments was from someone being racist! But then hating one living creature over another IS a form of racism! Compassion doesn't cost anything luckily and I am glad to have set up and run an organisation which cares and is compassionate.
