A man was stabbed with such force that one of his ribs was broken by the blade of the knife, a court was told.
Syden Pearson, 26, died from his injuries after being repeatedly stabbed in a Worthing street following a late-night row.
Kai Orgles, 19, denies a single charge of murder.
Lewes Crown Court was told the two men were involved in a confrontation in Shelby Road on January 30 after Orgles and two friends were asked to leave a house they visited.
Mr Pearson and a friend had also been visiting the house and a row started in the street when Orgles was told to go.
The prosecution allege Orgles, of Moore Close, Durrington, walked off but then turned round and ran up to Mr Pearson and stabbed him.
Witnesses have told the jury Mr Pearson collapsed on the ground, bleeding heavily.
He was dead by the time the paramedics arrived.
Police have not been able to find the weapon, which is believed to have been a kitchen knife.
Forensic pathologist Dr Nat Carey, who carried out a post mortem, told the court Mr Pearson suffered from five wounds to his back, chest and arm.
One of the wounds cut through a rib bone and punctured a lung.
He said: "It takes significant force to cut through a rib."
The doctor estimated the knife must have had a blade of at least 16cms long.
Other wounds penetrated the liver and kidney, which would have caused extensive bleeding. The doctor said at least two of the wounds were potentially fatal because of the internal damage they caused.
The doctor said there was no evidence of wounds caused by Mr Pearson, who was a fit and healthy young man, trying to defend himself.
The jury was told that when Orgles was arrested he told police he must have accidentally stabbed Mr Pearson when he was defending himself.
The prosecution allege he did not kill Mr Pearson accidentally or in self-defence but stabbed him because he intended to kill him or cause serious injury.
The trial continues.
