Sussex roads "not damaged" by heat wave

Sussex roads have not been damaged by the heat say council bosses.

According to Brighton and Hove City Council, road surfaces melting in the heat should be a thing of the past after it revealed it uses a new surfacing technique.

A spokesman for the council said: “We hope to have ended the issue of melted roads in summer by using a more modern process to surface them.

“We use a process called micro-asphalting – and it doesn’t melt when it’s hot.

“Roads which melt tend to use a tar and chippings system – tar is poured on the road and then chippings put on top, but the chippings tend to get ground into the road leaving tar exposed on the surface, which melts pretty easily in these temperatures.

“Micro-asphalting uses water to form an emulsion with oil, which causes a chemical reaction and sets hard.

“There may be one or two old hotspots left here and there which could melt but it should be becoming a thing of the past in the city.”

Both West Sussex County Council and East Sussex County Council have reported no major problems with their roads because of the heat.

those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. the roads in the city are in an awful state with pot holes and dips all over the place. stop crowing about roads not melting and rather than wasting cash on spin and pr invest the cash in fixing the roads - just get on with the job.

Think you'll find this is the Argus asking the questions of the councils to try and find a story rather than the councils putting the story out.

Roads not damaged by heatwave.... so no story then? What a pointless waste of space! Couldnt you fill it with an advert for a Jordan lookylikey instead?

Road damage is caused by water freezing in the cracks and then expanding - as well as general wear and tear.
Heat seldom damages roads.
Our roads are in such a bad condition because:
1. They are constantly being dug up and not repaired properly.
2. They are not resurfaced until they are falling apart.
3. Even though we pay astronomical road tax only a small part of it is spent on the roads.
The roads surfaces in Brighton are some of the worst I have seen in Europe. Real 3rd world stuff. A total disgrace.
Go to any major city in Europe and you won't see anything like as much damage - even in the old Eastern block. It's embarrassing.
