Sussex's cheapest streets revealed

A LEAGUE table of the cheapest streets in Sussex has been published.

Hastings and St Leonards have long been seen as somewhere cheap to live.

But when comparison website Mouseprices.com published its property prices league table for Sussex, the proof was there in black and white.

The figures are based on Land Registry data covering sales dating back to April 2000.

They showed that Hastings and St Leonards dominate the league table of the cheapest places to buy a home in East Sussex.

Greeba Court in St Leonards topped the list with the average home costing just £63,300, closely followed by Castlehill Passage in Hastings where the average was £71,400.

A spokeswoman for Mouse prices.com said the results were affected by the number of flats in streets, which were obviously cheaper than houses.

She said: “It appears that many of the streets contain a high proportion of flats.

“As such, streets which predominantly consist of detached properties will tend to rank more highly than streets which predominantly consist of flats.

“Also, it’s worth noting that this list may include properties in streets which have not sold in normal free market conditions, such as ‘right to buy’ and compulsory purchase schemes or areas already subject to demolition and regeneration.”

In Brighton and Hove, Selsfield Drive, off Lewes Road, was the cheapest place to live, followed by Bread Street and Harmsworth Crescent in Hove.

In West Sussex, Worthing flats at the Guildbourne Centre were the cheapest, costing an average of £89,400.

Second was Lintot Square in Southwater near Horsham, followed by Adur Valley Court in Upper Beeding.

The reason the properties are cheap (in todays market) is know one in their right mind would want to live there, I am a bit embarrassed to say I once went out with a woman from Harmsworth crescent, which is in fact in Hangleton, Hove, and have to say the place is a dump, full of single parents and chavs, it's like Hoves answer to Whitehawk.

They are the cheapest places to live as they are the odd private home for sale on council estates.
What a rather silly article.

And some of the prices are years out of date so, whilst a nice ad, it's not based on up-to-date data.

I'm sure she's feeling just as bad about going out with you.

Estate Agent: "So here is the kitchen diner, spacious and roomy I think you'll agree, with enough room to rack up a few lines of coke, and don't mind him in the corner, he usually fixes up at around 11am after Cash in the Attic and won't bother you for most of the day. Upstairs is a generous 2 bedrooms replete with good decoration, one still showing the remants of a domestic dispute but the other the nursery is in good condition all things considered. The bathroom is well used, mostly by the locals who used to come here to shoot up but overall I think you'll find this location a great first step on the housing ladder. Any questions?"

You certainly sound quite a catch John.

Which makes me wonder what you're doing spending your Sunday evenings and Monday mornings on a local news internet forum.

Great, so now I can become a home 'owner' meaning being in massive debt in exchange for an overpriced rabbit hutch slave box that's going to continue depreciating in value in a revolting area. No thanks I think I'll stay 100% debt free and happy.

The sad thing is I do but not from my own personal experience. I also used to live in Moulsecoomb, not exactly the rich end of town by any means. Whilst my post was a jovial jab which may not have been in the best tastes, the issues in some of the areas cited which I do know first hand are grave and it seems as if nothing has been successful in helping resolve those problems.

As for knowing the lingo, you've only got to open your eyes, keep your ears to the ground and even just read the odd book to know what's going on under everybody's noses (no pun intended) in just about any modestly small town.

The UN reported a couple of weeks ago that the UK has seen a massive surge in cocaine usage, cocaine capital of Europe I think and that's no surprise to me.

That said, you're just as likely to see it being used in some of the streets mentioned above as you are on Dyke Road.

Frankly I'm suspicious of anyone who hasn't experimented in drugs, they're always far less interesting and aware than those who have. And it's a total myth that drugs like coke are taken in 'certain areas' it's everywhere in all stratas of society.

These cheap houses are great! I have just bought one which I will use as a stable for some of my horses. When I am brushing the horses, sometimes the locals creep in on their stump-like arms and legs, baying for cocaine. I stand firm and tall above them, and deny their filthy habits - they shall not have cocaine and neither shall you. Sometimes I give them a lemsip.

The man who went on a date with the lady from Harmsworth Crescent, he is familiar, he came around to my new Horse Lodge on his little stumpy hands and knees, begging one of my fine horses to go out with him. The horses were greatly aloof and turned him down - how sad he was! Even the little Shetland Pony was not impressed. Had I a goat, I may have allowed him to touch it.

Wow, my security word was "Choosy-Equine"!!!

The thing is I am M.D. of the company and employ staff to work for me so that I don't usually have to. I like reading the comments on the Argus forum as I find the different views on the various subjects quite fascinating and often the comments are much more interesting than the original article!.

MD of the company! My horse would be a better MD!

I've a good mind to make you up a package of dissolvable vitamin C tablets and a load of prosthetic foreheads - it's the least you deserve.

I still don't really understand what being the MD of the company has to do with the Argus website. Unless you're the MD of the Argus? In which case, you must be very proud.
