Firefighters are warning people not to cook food in the middle of the night after a man slept through fire alarms started by his own burning cooking.
The alarm was raised at 4.45am today in Ventnor Villas, Hove.
Neighbours in a block of five flats were evacuated after fire alarms sounded.
A man had started to cook egg and pasta but fallen asleep.
Firefighters had to wake him up on his sofa.
No-one was injured and the fire did not spread.
Firefighters based at Hove are warning people not to start cooking late at night because of the risk of starting a fire.
Crew commander Jon Cater said: “It could have been a completely different story.”
