Firefighters are warning people not to cook food in the middle of the night after a man slept through fire alarms started by his own burning cooking.

The alarm was raised at 4.45am today in Ventnor Villas, Hove.

Neighbours in a block of five flats were evacuated after fire alarms sounded.

A man had started to cook egg and pasta but fallen asleep.

Firefighters had to wake him up on his sofa.

No-one was injured and the fire did not spread.

Firefighters based at Hove are warning people not to start cooking late at night because of the risk of starting a fire.

Crew commander Jon Cater said: “It could have been a completely different story.”
