Brighton teen beaten round head with bottle

A teenager was beaten round the head with a wine bottle as he collected his younger brother from school.

David Wakely, 18, was left with cuts and a swollen face after he was set upon near Falmer High School Now the bruised youngster has started an online petition calling for action to end drink-fuelled crime by youths on the streets of Moulsecoomb.

Police said yesterday they were investigating the attack, which happened in Lucraft Road, Moulsecoomb, Brighton, at about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Mr Wakely was collecting his brother, Dean, 11, who is starting at the school in September.

As they left the school they passed a group of three boys and a girl, aged 16 or under, who shouted Dean’s name.

When they walked on a bottle flew over their heads and smashed on the kerb.

They turned to see the youths running towards them.

David told Dean to run and stayed to hold the youths off.

One of them put his hand in a bag of wine bottles, pulled one out and hit him over the left side of his head.

Stunned, he was pushed into a hedge where the boys punched him several times in the face.

He told The Argus: “They were punching the hell out of me.”

David managed to get one of them to the floor and squeezed through a gap in the hedge before running to find his brother.

The boys gave chase but they lost them and returned home to call the police.

David spent three hours at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

He said: “They were fears at first that I’d damaged my ear drum and possibly broken my jaw.

“They said luckily it was heavy swelling and bruising.”

He said he, his brother and his parents are all distressed by the attack.

He said: “My brother is pretty shaken up at having seen his older brother getting beaten up.

“It really has affected the whole family quite badly.”

David is urging Argus readers to sign his petition calling for an end to underage drinking by visiting this petition.

Anyone who saw what happened or has any information about the attack is asked to call Sussex Police on 08456070999 quoting serial 1140 of July 8.
