Man stabbed in the neck in Brighton

A man was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle while queuing for a taxi.

The 22-year-old, from Seaford, needed emergency surgery after the attack in King’s Road, Brighton, in the early hours of Sunday.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the attack, at 2.50am, to come forward.

The trouble started when a small scuffle broke out between the victim and a man who was with another group of people at a taxi rank near the Thistle Hotel.

The suspect left with three women and two other men.

He is believed to have walked around the side of the hotel out of sight and smashed a bottle against a wall near a cashpoint before returning.

One of the women he was with shouted: “Don’t do it.”

He walked back and stabbed the victim in the neck with his bottle.

The attacker’s friends were said to have left as soon as they saw what he had done.

He ran off and was last seen turning into Ship Street.

The suspect is described as white, in his mid 20s, 6ft tall, slim to medium build with short dark hair.

He was wearing a blue polo shirt and jeans.

The victim’s friends were drenched in blood as they tried to help the man.

He needed an emergency operation at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he remained in a serious but stable condition last night.

Detective Sergeant Steve Tattersall of Sussex Police said: “This was a totally unprovoked and vicious attack.

“The suspect was with people he knew that night.

“We would appeal for people who witnessed it or any of the group that were with him to come forward.”

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to contact DC Stewart Cameron at Brighton and Hove CID on 0845 6070999, quoting reference number 331 of July 19, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A similar thing happened to me in the same place virtually,in 1982.
It's nothing new.Brighton has always been a violent place.I still have the scars to prove it.

Sorry Mr Donkey these kind of vicious attacks are very very rare in Brighton, which is actually a safe place. There have always been and will always be crazy people around but every big city has its problems and unfortunately on a saturday night when thousands have been out drinking these things tend to occur. Brighton is a place where most people feel safe though and for a city of its size, it is a lot safer than many many places. What happened is appalling, but let's not get too paranoid.

OK.
Didn't the "Crazy" people used to get put into institutions?
Is "Thousands drinking." a reasonable excuse?
Brighton safer than where?
Gaza strip?West Beirut?The Bronx?Hastings?Worth
ing?Eastbourne?Bosni
a?Crawley?Dieppe?

No thousands drinking is not a reasonable excuse, but it doesn't mean that Brighton is a dangerous place. I go out very single weekend and walk back home in the early hours of the morning. Never even witnessed a fight, but that doesn't mean there is nobody fighting or getting attacked, it just shows that it isn't very common. All my mates will say the same thing: we've all lived in different countries and cities, and Brighton really seems to be one of the safest. Yep, used to live in Dieppe, and there were far more people looking for trouble there than in Brighton, and there are only 50000 inhabitants in Dieppe! You must agree that even the "bad" areas of Brighton aren't really bad! Whitehawk? Must be joking! When I was living in San Francisco there would at least be a murder a week in the neighbourhood town of Oakland. That's what I call a dangerous place! I'm not saying Brighton is the safest city on earth, but for a city of 300000 is it a hell lot safer than many others of the same size.

i wouldn't call brighton a 'dangerous' place, but neither would i queue for a taxi at 2.50am. when west st kicks out, all maneer of drunks and rejects flood the streets, and anything can and does happen. this incident is one of many similar that occur on a regular basis. most, thankfully, are nowhere near as serious, but many result in hospital treatment for somebody.

I totally agree, Brighton in comparison to Liverpool and alot of towns up north is alot safer. You only have to look at what goes on in London on an almost weekly basis aswell. An incident like that is relativley isolated. It amazes me that sometimes people on here deride Brighton but it is one of the better places in the country to live.

you lot should drive a cab! i have, and 99% of people are lovely, the 1% should be put down, however without them hundreds of doormen would be out of work!

You should move to Eastbourne. You only have to worry about being hit on the head by an elderly lady's handbag if you get in their way.

I was there, getting picked up in a taxi at 3. I didn't see a scuffle until I got into the back of the taxi at that time, so I think the timing is wrong. I didn't see much, just silhouettes but I could see punches thrown.
I did see two guys arguing before, so this may have been the friends of the attacker trying to convince him not to do it.. They were heading round the side of the hotel, so this fits with the story. I couldn't for the life of me identify them though!!
I had been drinking, I wasn't violent - most people aren't. It's the people, not the drink. I do avoid west street though...

Friends of the attacker grass him up to the police, don't hide him. Who would want that kind of person for friend. Next time he will probably kill someone.

I agree! This is a family man who is now seriously ill in hospital!! If the coward who did this can turn on him so easily, imagine what he could do next time? He may well turn on you!! Turn him in to the police now!!!

I have been for many nights out in Liverpool Manchester and Blackpool have never had any hassle. I go out in Brighton and walk along the seafront there and back and there is hardly ever any trouble I have only seen about 3 instances in 12 yrs of weekends out. I’m not saying there isn’t any i just saying they are really few and far between and to be involved in one is very unlikely
