Beachdown's cancelled - what to do now?

Disgruntled Beachdown ticketholders left with a gaping hole in their weekend are already starting to make new plans.

The most ambitious, but perhaps most unlikely, comes from Ben Steers, who says he has been working through the night to set up an alternative free festival, Beachfrown, on open ground on Sunday and possibly Monday.

He has also set up a Facebook group, which already has scores of members encouraging him, but himself concedes the logistics may make it impossible.

He has already been strongly warned by police it would be illegal to party at Devil's Dyke, and is now looking to find private land to hold the impromptu event at instead.

He said: “From social networking sites it is clear that there is high demand for some kind of event this weekend.

“I am looking at the possibility of organising a FREE event on the Sunday and possibly the Bank Holiday Monday.

He added: “Realistically, there will probably be too much red tape involved for this to go ahead, but I'm working through the night to attempt to make sure the relevant parties are contacted.”

And a spokesman for Sussex Police warned revellers not to attempt to come to the site.

He said: "We urge anyone with tickets for the event not to turn up. Security teams and police will remain at the site over the weekend and there will be no access or unofficial event."

Meanwhile, Concorde 2 is trying to work out how they can move the acts due to play their new bands stage at Beachdown back to its 540-capacity Brighton venue.

Other festivals around the country include the Get Loaded festival on Clapham Common and the Notting Hill Carnival.

A lower-key event is the family-friendly mini festival Gomstock at The Compasses Inn in Gomshall, Surrey.

There are rumours, which may confirmed tomorrow, that The Fish Brothers (who hate jumping on bandwagons) are doing a B******s to Beachdown show at the Hare and Hounds in Preston Circus, Brighton, on Saturday night. Free entry. 9-11pm. If it goes ahead it will be their first Brighton gig since their city-wide ban was lifted (apart from their show on Thursday supporting Subhumans at Engine Rooms).

ukbesty, I have exactly the same problem and I can't find anything that compares to a four day festival. Random clubs nights are great and everything but then we would have to get accomadation at the last minute for all that.

Free entry with your Beachdown ticket downstairs at the Latest Music Bar (formerly Joogleberry) on Manchester Street in Brighton, 10pm on Saturday night. Expect some raucous, dance-yer-arse-off cowpunk from Brighton five-piece Mel's Allstars, a spot of unicycling strip-tease from Count Adriano Fettucini (no, really) and some floor-filling DJ tunes! Just £2 for non-Beachdowners. Can't say fairer than that, can you?
