Hundreds queue for opening of new Worthing food giant

Hundreds of people queued to check-out a newly revamped supermarket.

Morrisons took over the run-down Co-op store in Newland Road, Worthing, earlier this year and has spent months transforming it into a gleaming new shop.

It officially opened for business today and attracted crowds of shoppers that packed the aisles.

Builders took just 14 weeks to strip the store back to its brickwork to install all new fixtures and fittings and give the building a much-needed facelift.

Co-op was forced to sell the store under competition laws after it bought the Somerfield chain.

Many of the former staff were kept on and more than 1,000 people applied for the 250 jobs on offer.

As well as the expected supermarket fare, the store includes a fishmonger and in-house bakery and sells electronic goods and homeware.

Manager Stuart Marshall said: “We want the store to be a focal point for the community.

“I'm proud of the staff's achievements and I want Worthing to be proud of us.”

Well here's a few facts about Worthing you might or might not know! It was repeatedly bombed during the war, but, the bombs actually did £500.00 worth of improvements to the area! Seagulls there fly upside down because there's absolutely nothing worth crapping on! During the sixties and seventies it was decided to make the area appear busier than it it actually was, town councilors voted to stand the dead up at bus stops or seat them along the seafront with newspapers taped to their hands! Sometimes when the tide goes out it refuses to come back in without coaxing! Tuesday morning is their busiest time of the week when the traffic lights change! To see this local event just follow the wide eyed locals as they move towards the lights in droves!

Oh snerper that was funny.
I was not sure if this story was a joke or people in Worthing really are this desperate.

Thanks, but it'll probably be seen as an inappropriate post, I can see the shadow of Jo Wadsworth hovering over me yet again! We seem to be regular pen pals lately, we communicate more than most married couples!

Now take all this and transfer it to wide eyed wino Brighton a few months ago
The magnificent relaunch of London road as a new premier shopping centre (sic) it was the landmark opening of ALDI (or something else Lidl inspired) the queues formed for hours and wound up side streets and around the block (pics in argus), so to all those who posted from Brighton-shaddup- you've got as many cousin marrying, six fingered banjo playing inbreds that would turn up to the opening of a bottle as we have, at least we got a decent supermarket (i hope) as opposed to a pound shop (have you seen how crowded they are in premier london road
love and kisses from worthing

I expect it's a bit too up market for Aldi really.

A condemned cockroach infested closed down charity shop would be more appropriate :)

Hey Snerper, what a comedian (not). In my opinion, Brighton is just as bad if not worse in some ways to Worthing. Why not take the pee out of Crawley, Lancing - anywhere - take your pick. I moved to London for 3 yrs and decided i preferred it here. Less tossers here than in Brighton!!

Wow, it was a bit of f u n Barney, don't take it personally, the article was about Worthing, not Crawley, not Lancing, but, W O R T H I N G!
I was going to say that during the three years you were in London there was one less in Worthing, but I decided not to,it's un-christian! You are of course right about tossers in Brighton, they are everywhere, it's a sign of the times mate, and after all a bit of fun is called for to cheer up this depression that this country has got itself into! I wasn't poking fun a you personally, I've never seen you, except on T.V. of course, and you're better lookig than Pugh!
P/S
it's Tuesday, did you go and see the magic light show this morning?

Say what you like about Worthing but it does have beautiful flower displays. Hides the awful dull bits around the town.
