Prehistoric blood-sucking creature spotted in Sussex

A prehistoric bloodsucking creature is making a comeback in a Sussex river.

Lampreys have been spotted in the River Ouse, which runs through Lewes and Newhaven.

The reappearance of the marine animal, once the favourite food of King Henry VIII, has been put down to the waterway becoming cleaner.

Conservationists say the proposed idea to allow canal boats to return to the river should be postponed to allow it to thrive.

having caught lamprey near the area of the old cement works quay years ago this is an intresting report, at that time boat traffic was regular so why should conservationists try and restrict boat traffic on a river that has, since time immemorial served such a suitable purpose, ie waterbourne transport

Good question John. I suspect its the usual over-reaction. By the time anyone gets close to thinking about canal boats on the Ouse the river will probably have many lampreys... and possibly salmon... and because of sea-level rise will be about half mile wide at Newhaven.

It would seem that the Argus have been busy re-routing the Ouse for the sake of this story... who knew it flowed though Seaford?

Thanks for spotting that Abrightonian. It's sent us back to our maps, and sparked a bit of a debate. I'm told the Ouse used to run through Seaford, and it does now join the sea at Seaford Bay. However, you are right, and strictly speaking the river does not today run through Seaford itself, and so I have amended the article.

Marrying one of those ended up with me living in Spain, under an assumed name, and also under a sombrero as an added precaution! Compared to the lady in question, Heather and Katey are merely trainee bloodsuckers!

perhaps they are making a comeback, but i'm sure the incinerator development will put a stop to it happening! there is already construction waste going in to the ouse on a daily basis at the moment, why arn't the conversationists worrying about that? cleaner river??? i dont think so....just wait until early next year when the construction waste has progressed into a 24hr operation..
