Yes of course. The air ambulance landing in central Brighton bringing traffic to a standstill is an everyday occurrence isn't it? Hardly news is it Granny?

For starters i attended this incident as i work for the emergency services, this lady is in critical condition and may not survive, and people seem to be joking about whether or not the helicoter was used or not!! Or making comments about Rotor blades, What a lovely community and City we all live in! Oh and Granny..... lets hope one of your family members doesnt require the air ambulance one day as you dont seem to think its very important that the argus are reporting it! Believe me should you ever meet the crews and need them to help you one day , it would be a totally different matter wouldnt it! How about wishing the woman well and that she survives!

Whole heartedly with you on this one.

Ignore some of the souls on here, they have some very disturbing thought processes which don't reflect the wider masses.

Here is to the recovery of this lady and also hats off to the hard work and dedication the air ambulance service gives to those in their time of need.

The helicopter would've attended due to the nature of the injuries, and the severity It effectively brings the hospital to the patient.

The helicopter has a Doctor and Paramedic on board who can carry out surgical procedures at the roadside, which is more than a conventional ambulance could do.

Hope that helps to explain why a helicopter landed.

Any particular reason why my comment has disappeared, along with peregrino de alpujjaras's original? At least mine was innocous. If his was offensive, why keep someone else's reply that includes his original? Just a system glitch or what?

is, was, has?

I got totally confused there, couldn't work out form the headline whether the poor woman was still stuck on the railing or not!

That chopper crew are possibly the closest things to angels we have.

Awaiting the follow up story.

I made a comment earlier and just wanted to point out that missing a 'p' from the word Helicopter doesnt warrent the stupid reply i got from 'peregrino de alpujjaras'. Just sums up the point i was making about such lovely human beings that live in this City! It was a totally worthless reply, Why did you bother! What point were you actually getting at, or were you just picking holes and not even taking notice of my point? My spelling and punctuation is totally irrelavent! Bravo

I can't beilieve what I have just read here. I wholeheartedly thank the detailed explanations for those that have trouble understanding desperate measures for desperate situations, even if they can spell. I t doesn't seem to give them a good citizen or compassionate hearts.
I do hope and pray the lady made it. Let all of us remember when there has been an accident and we are held up in traffic to be glad the accident isn't us! And wait with good grace and consideration. Better to be late that in an ambulance. Air or otherwise.

I viewed this horrific accident in the Old Steine earlier today, and I have to say, I am finding it hard to believe that people find news like this appropriate to make sick jokes at. I fully commend the emergency services for their efforts and send best wishes to the lady in concern, and her family.

Err excuse me, my elder brother was one of the first at the scene he saw everything what happened and was working but then rushed to help her.. They helped her and all you lot can do is talk about the helicopter. That's honestly frustrating. Me and my family we really hope this lady survives. My brother and all the other people (ambulances and everyone) who helped her are absolute heroe's. If you were in a similar position as this woman im sure you'd appreciate it if the helicopter came to take you to a special unit to make sure you get help immediately. Have some respect. Bob1983 thankyou for being part of the team to help her, and for sticking up for her.

Well done to your brother, and the emergency services and to all the people who have a heart and generally care about others, and seriously, who uses the word "spastic" anymore, think that's all we need to know about you, no doubt you will now come up with some sarcastic, unfunny, idiotic, crass comment now.

Firstly there is NO Sussex Air Ambulance, this helicopter is based in Surrey! However there is a Sussex Police and Ambulance helicopter, jointly run and funded by the police and NHS which operates from Shoreham, IN Sussex!
Secondly, there is no benefit what so ever to deploy the Surrey Air Ambulance to Brighton, The RSCH is a major trauma centre and is literally 2 minutes away, they are more then capable of deploying a SIMCAS doctor to the scene ( The Sussex and Surrey Immediate Medical Care Scheme).
The designated landing site for air ambulances taking patients to the RSCH is East Brighton Park, this is a surveyed site which pilots are familiar with. Landing at the Old Steine is not surveyed and could cause many complications.
Dont get me wrong, they do a marvelous job but I certainely wouldnt donate any money for the apparent Sussex Air Ambulance (which doesnt exist) when there is one provided by the NHS!

i agree,
i would think it takes longer to bring the traffic to a standstill and land the helicopter than it does use the yellow van in the background.
the west sussex police/ambulance is yellow and blue and takes a good 5 mins to scramble and take off and then 8 miles away from the steine . all for a bad leg.
i would only asume the surry helicopter was in the area leaving shoreham for some reason at the right time . but who knows .,
they must do a great job and keep them doing it i say.not their funding
just use them wisely and try to reduce their horriffic costs.

did she jump though . ?

1:21am Thu 10 Sep 09

Oh, now we are playing god?, if she jumped then serves her right? waste of money? It sounds like a simple accident, a horrible one at that, regardless, people who didnt even know this person chose to give their time and help and are now probably having the worst sleep of their lives, due the horrific injuries this woman must have suffered and are stiil traumatised by what they saw today, give them a break and be thankful there are people out there that will help you if you have an accident, I am geniunely shocked by the lack compassion shown here today!e a l!! and have a liitle faith in the people who showed they are true altruists.

On incidents like this all the emergency services work together as a team to get the best result. The air ambulance would of been called due to the nature of her injuries, although it is based in Surrey at Dunsfold it is funded by the people of Surrey and Sussex and serves both counties. It would of only taken about 10 mins to travel this distance. The doctor on board provides additional skills to the crews on scene. The helicopter is used to bring these skills to the incident and can be used to take a patient to a more appropriate hospital if needed,ie burns, head injury centres etc, hence the patient going by ambulance to hospital with the doctor and the aircraft moving site so the road can re open, hope this explains a few things.

What a bunch of miserable pessimistic lot you are to make such negative comments. What the women went through sounds painful and traumatic and those that were on hand to help aswell as the emergency services need commending not critisising.
The helicopter was obviously needed so why bring up petty arguments about it? Are you all in a position to assess an injury and decide how urgently that person gets to hospital?
As for the people having a go at the paramedic that commented on here you seriously need to have a word with yourselves.

BTW - Get well soon to the unfortunate lady and three cheers for the rescue services !

I dont usually feel the need to comment but am really apalled to hear some of these comments.

I would firstly like to wish the lady and her family all my sincere hopes and good wishes for a full recovery.

I doubt that anyone has the full facts of this case and until they do should not be so quick judge. The air ambulance is only called when someone is in serious danger and is needed to transport someone fast to a suitable hospital for their needs.

Also after raising a consderably large amount for the Sussex Air Ambulance in August in memory of someone very dear to me who needed their services i can say that SUSSEX AIR AMBULANCE does exist and came into operation early 2008!! It is run with the police but is a seperate charity run soley on fundraising and generous donations.

I just hope to god that one of you will never need the services of this incredibly valuable service now available in our area!!
