Sussex MP criticised for taking cash from pro-hunt groups

Anti-hunt campaigners have criticised a Sussex MP for accepting a £24,500 windfall a day after unveiling plans to end the hunting ban.

It was revealed yesterday that £5,500 of the cash received by Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert, the Conservative shadow environment minister, came directly from donors with an active interest in bloodsports.

Simon Wild, from West Sussex Wildlife Protection, said: "It leaves him somewhat tainted. David Cameron should think twice about having him in the shadow cabinet."

Mr Herbert received £24,500 of political donations from seven separate donors on July 30, the same day that Horse and Hounds magazine carried an article reporting a pledge he had made over the hunting ban.

It cited an announcement made by the politician at a foxhound show in Peterborough on July 22 when he revealed it would be a Conservative manifesto pledge to hold a free vote on overturning the law.

Fox-hunting has been illegal since the passing of the Hunting Act 2004 which followed a lengthy public debate and mass protests.

Three of the donations which Mr Herbert received were from public supporters of hunting and shooting.

He accepted £1,500 from gun seller and hunting outfitter William and Sons, £2,000 from grouse-shooting magnate Michael Cannon and £2,000 from the Altnaharra hunting, fishing and shooting estate.

The remaining donations were from shipping magnates, investment managers and businessmen.

Mr Wild said Mr Herbert had a long association with hunting, through his involvement with the British Field Sports Society, the predecessor to the Countryside Alliance.

Mr Wild added: "The fact these donations have come in indicates a conflict of interest. He has essentially received remuneration for furthering the interests of these businesses."

The Conservatives have previously said they want to have a free vote about the hunting ban but have tried to keep it as a low profile issue.

A member of the Crawley and Horsham hunt, who asked not to be named, said: "I don't think that it will ever be changed back to how it was but the law does need to be revisited. So much of it doesn't work. If I go walking with three dogs, for example, and they run off after an animal I can be prosecuted for it, but if I only have two dogs it's ok. That doesn't make sense.

"At the moment there are foxes being shot, poisoned and gassed because they can't be hunted and people want to protect their animals. How is that any better?"

Mr Herbert is currently in Zimbabwe on parliamentary business. He did not return calls from The Argus yesterday.

come on the "fox hunting ban" which is the worst written bit of Law introduced by this Gov. was a sop to the "hate posh people brigade" in the party so that they would vote for a War
And the great unwashed?
Laws are introduced to improve animal welfare in this country so they buy cheaper meat from foreign countries without the welfare "restraints" and then when the farmers complain - oh rich farmers blah-di-blah

Shame on MP Nick Herbert! In my opinion the hunting ban didn't go far enough. Foxes attacking livestock? Bring back the age old tradition of shepherds - they carried a big stick - not a shotgun. I attended a conference on Rural Affairs a few years ago. I learned the lambs were dying of exposure rather than fox attacks, as the lambing season had been altered artificially to take place during the colder months rather than the warmer months of spring months.

The Hunting Bill has got to be the worst piece of legislation visited on the people of the UK. It is full of loopholes and does nothing for the purpose it was intended for ie. the welfare of foxes. The fox is still classified as vermin so we can kill it in all manner of horrible, painful ways to ensure a lingering death. But kill it quickly with a pack of hounds and you get prosecuted. The police have many better things to do than enforce this act, hence a complete absence of prosecutions, even though hunting still continues.

Frequently as I ride across the downs upon my Mighty Horse, brushing through the thickets of Mighty Gorse, we see the Fox Hunters hunting a train fox and chasing a real fox. But they have rubber-gloved the teeth of the hound! So as they bite onto the fox it is held but not maimed.

And then it is brought back to the home of the hunt and hurled into the gas chamber!

Please, please, please, stop this brutality. When Maggie took the milk, no-one spoke up, as they were small and undernourished children without their daubs of calcium. When Tony stole the life of Princess Diana, only a tear from Alastair Campbell was to wash the seats in the House of Commons. Your Majesty, show us you care!

If they legalise fox-hunting, I'm going to campaign to legalise bull baiting.
It's the same thing, the only difference is that it's a working class pursuit.
It was only banned so the working classes would have nothing to do other than work - to make the fox-hunters rich enough to fox-hunt.
And the only reason they started hunting foxes was because they'd killed all the wolves. Foxes were always considered vermin & it was beneath the upper classes to hunt them, until they had nothing else to hunt.
