Thank you to your three reporters who wrote such an interesting and well researched article about the A259 bus lane during the morning rush hour (The Argus, September 11).

I don’t think anyone would dispute that this bus lane has made bus journeys quicker – but only by a few minutes was the conclusion of your reporters.

However, it’s in the evening rush hour when the road between Rottingdean and Longridge Avenue shows its true awfulness.

Traffic queues have always been a feature of the evening rush hour, but only as far as the Rottingdean traffic lights.

Along this section traffic towards Peacehaven used to have a clear run.

Now, past Rottingdean traffic lights there are three bus stops where the bus totally blocks the road.

If the bus stops, everything stops and the traffic quickly backs up beyond the junction.

Then, even when the lights are green, nothing moves – no cars, no buses.

Whoever thought that on such a busy road this is acceptable must have been desperate.

I’m sorry your reporters made no mention of the safety issues which so concern us.

People trying to cross to the bus stops where there is just a very narrow safety zone between three lanes of fast moving traffic, such as at Chichester Drive West, are very vulnerable. Believe me, crossing the road there can be very frightening and dangerous.

This road is very winding, going up and down steep hills.

The lanes are so narrow that in places oncoming buses and lorries force cars right on to the edge of the bus lane where they are dangerously close to buses and taxis overtaking them on the inside.

Add in frustrated motorists trying to get round the stopped buses and this road has become a safety nightmare.

I use the buses as much as I can and of course appreciate any improved journey time but surely the cost is too high.

This road affects everybody living in the area.

The roadworks carried out last week meant that for one day the bus lane markings were totally removed but as far as I could see there were no serious delays.

It was a real pleasure to drive along that road and for once feel safe. The traffic ran smoothly. This surely shows how unnecessary the bus lane is.

People living in the area want the road back as it was, with a wide hatched safety zone in the middle.
