Brighton Pride forced to cut staff

Pride bosses are being forced to make staff cut backs as they face up to a £50,000 funding shortfall.

One of its office workers will be made redundant and the two remaining members of staff will have their hours reduced.

Chief executive Lesley Burn said the decision had been made with a “heavy heart”.

One 30 hour post will go and the remaining positions will be reduced to four days a week.

Pride said the cutback would save £2,500 a month which will save the charity £8,750 in the 14 weeks left until the end of the year.

Bosses announced five weeks ago that it faced a potential deficit of £50,000 but a fundraising drive to raise the cash before the end of December has raised less than £5,000.

Despite the reduction in costs caused by the redundancy, the charity still needs to collect more than £36,500 to reach its target.

All those 10s of thousands of people descending on the city for a whole weekend, and Pride still can't make ends meet. Maybe it's time to call it a day in that case.
It beggars belief.

Oh come on. Pride needs to step up a notch. The last 3 have been same-old-same-old. There are plenty of marketing, PR and creative brains living in Brighton happy to give free advice to make Pride feel fresh and funky once again.

£2500 PCM is near on £30k a year for a 30 hour week. How can this amount of time and money ever have been justified to work on a gay parade, for pi**ed up queens to wander through brighton on an August weekend?

Hooray - here we have a "legitimate" chance for the homophobic to have a go :(
It IS the busiest week of the year for Brighton thanks to Pride you know also makes Brighton a more vibrant exiting place to live in or maybe some of youze guyz would rather live in Eastbourne (sorry eastbourne)

A very good barometer of how popular something really is, is when money is required to keep it going.

The fact that Pride makes no money, and can't raise any tells a lot about where it REALLY sits in people's priorities. The same is true of B&H Albion - no Tony Bloom, no club.

I appreciate that The Argus needs to talk things up, or there would be no paper, but in reality, things like Pride, The Albion, the ice rink etc. matter very little to most people. And for those it does matter to, very, very few will ever put their hands in their pockets to make a difference. They always expect someone else to pay for it.

Brighton was already a vibrant place before minority groups invaded it. There used to be a world class aquarium before the anti-animal in captivity brigade came along and turned into a place with a few fish tanks. With rich Edwardian and Regency architecture, nice pubs and restaurants, Pride is a outside unwelcome addition. Neither native to the history or culture. So go away to Rio, Brazil where you belong.

But if it's so great, and 'the busiest weekend of the year', why can't it turn a profit or at least break even? We are always hearing about the 'pink pound' and how gay people have so much more disposable income than straight people, as most of them don't have a family to support.
It doesn't make any sense.
It's nothing to do with homophobia or living in Eastbourne. It's to do with badly managed finances.

It's probably time that Pride gated the event and charged people a few quid to get in...just a fiver or something.
This would stop residents complainging about people screwing and **** in the nearby wooded area, raise money to cover the event and also exclude those who really are just interested in getting off their heads because they turn up at any old free event.
As for you maxiboy, you made me laugh. Nice pubs and restaurants. Tourist tat holes with filthy toilets and restaurants shoving out microwave food and really people can get restaurants and pubs in any old town. Brighton's success is having a different event throughout the year long calendar which means appealing to as wide an audience as possible.
If you start wiping out gays, football fans, charity bike riders, motorbikers, Boyzone fans etc you start to look like some of the sad seaside town's in Britain.

Obviously you don't know where the best places are. I do! Something you get to know when you are born and bred in the place.

Pride has been growing in strength throughout the years..... And now has grown to be a rather large event, It's unfortunate that the weather played a foul part in this years festival, as alot of people went home or just didnt go.

And I'm sure that rising costs to stage this event have increased as the years have gone by..... BUT I cannot work out that 50K loss is just from this year, surely its been a rolling over from the last few years ??? It'll be nice to see the accounts to see just how this figure came about!!!
With a down turn in the ecomony alot of people are saving their money and even though Pride (and some local business) are driving a fundraising effort to raise this money - I still dont think its going to work, it maybe time to admit defeat and look at ways of changing the event.
I'm sure costs can be saved if it is downsized to a smaller event, just for one year, or two..... Im sure this would keep some residents happy!!

I was there this year and a lot of money was changing hands (ice cream vans, fast food etc.). If you look at posts after the most recent pride, there was complaints of too many people attending ("gay for a day" was one.)
This is just poor money management...

A 50K funding shortfall is exactly that - a shortfall. Funding that was expected, but that didn't come through. Possibly (probably) from a private donor who's been bitten by the recession.

You know, the one that's biting *all* charitable causes, including Pride.

maxiboy - it does seem like you resent anyone and everyone who's moved ot Brighton from out of town - but considering that the part of the economy that isn't tourism (out-of-towners) is made up of digital and new media businesses (also out-of-towners, unless you're labouring under the misapprehension that Brighton breeds unnaturally talented coders) you're going to have to get used to it.

The gay scene's been an important part of Brighton's heritage for over a hundred years. Time enough for you to get used to it.

@Gentleman Jim
You mean, you have to live with a bit of homophobia too, even though you're straight?

You poor old thing, you. Must be awful. Pity everyone you meet is such a bigot, eh?

Ever thought about tackling it? I hear there are charities for people who suffer homophobic abuse (regards of their actual orientation).

Maybe you could have a parade every year - let the world know that you're not afraid to be tolerant of others. You could call it - oh, I don't know - Pride?

Well said, JRH. The attitudes you get about Brighton are so ***boring*** -- but the remarks are also illegal. It's not just charities who can help, it's the police and council. (And by the way, I'm not gay either, but I won't let that BS pass. And with regard to an earlier poster, I celebrate Pride too --not to be "gay for a day", but as a celebration of freedom and particularly sexual freedom.

To many staff (stewards) standing idle.. all costs money.

there was 5 stewards on the road closure by the Hob Goblin before the parade got there, and a staggering 12 after. Surely they only need 2 or 3 there...

This is why its now called PRIDE not Gay Pride.

I saw 100's of family down in the town, are people saying that all these kids are Gay... Shocker.

Pride is merely a Mardi-Gra. As for shortfall, didn't Loop, Beachdown both have shortfalls...

Fat Boy Slim.. That should be stopped in Brighton due to it all Druggies...

Rocky Horror Show should be stopped as its about Transexuals.

The list goes on..

surely in life we have our own life issues to deal with than to worry about what everyone else is doing.. I know I do...

The only thing that annoys me about Pride is the number of restaurants, pubs, clubs and hotels who make an absolute FORTUNE out of that one week - and yet when it's all over refuse point blank to distribute any of that profit to the organisation which brought all the extra punters in in the first place.

I think it's time for serious negotiation between the Pride organisers and the above to set out a profit-share scheme. Even if 10% of the profits from all the businesses who see an increase in that week handed the money over to Pride, the problem would be solved there and then.

They officaly can't orgainse a **** up in the park :(.
A parade and a **** up once a year should'nt take a massive amount of staff to organise.
if brighton clubs and pubs who get cash out of pride they should be shamed into chucking some cash at it.
