Sussex TV viewers angry at losing channels

Angry TV viewers has been inundating The Argus with calls after losing channels since they retuned their televisions and set top boxes.

On Wednesday thousands of people across Sussex had to retune their digital TV equipment to keep Five.

But the move has backfired as some can no longer get the channel and have even lost other channels.

Over the last two days our phones have not stopped ringing with our readers asking for help to retune and to complain they can no longer watch their favourite shows.

The Argus tried its best to help guide people through the confusing retune with varying degrees of success.

By yesterday calls coming into us were from viewers who had managed to retune but who had lost channels.

To further compound the headache some digital boxes stopped working as well.

The boxes which will no longer work are: the Daewoo models DS608P and SV900, Labgear DTT100, Triax DVB2000T, Portland DP100 and Bush IDVCR01.

A Freeview spokeswoman said: “The vast majority of viewers appear to have retuned without any problems.

“It is rare for people to lose channels but sometimes a second, or third, retune may be required to resolve these issues.

“We would advise viewers to check cables and connections and then perform a full retune, sometimes called a 'first time installation' or 'factory reset', in order to pick up all available channels in their area. If, after this, viewers are still missing channels, we would recommend they contact the manufacturer. All signals are broadcasting as expected.”

If you are having difficulty retuning you can contact 08456 05 11 22 or visit www.tvretune.co.uk

Why call the Argus? Shouldn't they be calling the Freeview helpline?

What do viewers expect if it is free? Could it be collusion between the satellite and cable companies to get more business?

Anyone who's favourite shows are on Five really needs to learn a bit of quality control...

Does anyone know how you balance a set-top box on a flat screen TV?

Hot Tip:
Short of news? Try localising a national issue - it's easy:

1) Take an issue affecting everyone in the press
2) Prefix the headline with 'Sussex'

Of course it stands to reason that if you have problems with your AV gear the first port of call should be the local paper .

I'll bet that's what is says in the User Operating Guide:
"Contact local newspaper for details"

I must admit when I lost channels, I immediately thought to ring the Argus to complain (not), then ring Freeview to find out what was going on.

Surely the Argus is the first port of call for every consumer problem.

Perhaps the people that have problems with such a task should either watch The Gadget Show on said Ch 5 or simply go back to watching 4 channels with a test card in the afternoon,IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE!
With refernce to the box/flat screen.....a roll of duck tape,a six inch nail and some blu-tak should do it.

A list of the boxes that wouldn't work after the retune was available on the internet for anyone who had a bit of sense. (Mobile phones are decommissioned all the time, but it doesn't seem to hit the press!)

There was a recognised problem on the Wednesday with 5 which meant that after the retune some people didn't get it, but this was published as a temporary fault and would be fixed in due time. Again, freely available information for those who could be bothered.

It's been one of the nicest Septembers weatherwise, so why are people complaining about TV. Get out and enjoy the outdoors, it's better for you and a walk along part of the South Downs might help you appreciate what a lovely place we live in!

FWIW not all flat screen TV's are digital - it's only relatively recently that most have been sold with integrated freeview, and even now some of the cheaper ones will only receive an analogue signal

As to whether the original comment was a joke - you decide!

Did you not hear of the arguments by the BBC?
They were spitting feathers that many many millions of the TV licence tax had been given to a quango to ensure there's lot of advertising about the situation, that registered disabled, OAPs(?) + some others will get new aerials if needed and digiboxes provided and then set up for them

Unfortunate but there you are. TV is not a God given right. Freeview's a free service. If you want something better get a dish or cabled up.
