She was named the 81st most influential gay person by The Independent and as described as "astonishingly vicious" by Germaine Greer.

So with those bragging rights already under her belt, Kemp Town's own Zoe Lyons investigated machismo, best described as swagger most commonly found in males, in her latest show.

And it resulted in a brilliant night that, as well as investigating her own machismo attributes, also took in the world of celebrity perfumes, cheap hotel rooms and the Pope's own feminine leanings with his big dress and red Dorothy shoes.

When it comes to observing the modern world, Zoe isn't as vicious as Germaine would have us believe, but at the same time she doesn't suffer fools - describing one simpleton she encountered on her travels as "the reason tins of soup come with cooking instructions", and pouring well-earned vitriol on that king of machismo, Sean Paul.

It wasn't all macho swagger though, as her brilliant tale of inadvertently getting involved in a threesome while going for a wee in the bushes at Pride proved.

And she poked further fun at herself with her tale of her civil partnership - a wedding with two brides, with both demanding it was their special day.

This being a hometown show, there was plenty of Hove-bashing and celebrations of Kemp Town's unique character, in particular the annual charity shop Bizarre Bazaar of second-hand fetish clothes.

For this year's comedy festival she played two nights at the Pavilion Theatre, while lesser comics were given the larger space of the Corn Exchange or Concert Hall. Hopefully next year our local hero will get the scale of venue she deserves.
