After being given a ticket for parking his motorbike outside his hair salon, businessman Richard John decided he had to take action.

The warden had claimed that Mr John had parked his motorcycle on the pavement, but Mr John responded: “I own the land, and have got the documents to prove it.”

So now he has installed a white fence around the 12ft-long plot at the junction of Rowlands Road and Milton Road in Worthing.

This has prompted a visit by highways officials from West Sussex County Council who said “you can't do that”, but Mr John is standing firm.

He is also demanding £3,000 compensation for loss of earnings.

Mandy Ainsworth, the borough council's parking spokewoman, said: “If we found the motorcycle to be on private land, we would, of course, cancel the PCN and advise people accordingly so that no more PCNs were issued here.”
