Thieves smashed car windows and slashed soft-top roofs to steal child seats.

A spate of 20 thefts from cars hit the Fiveways and Preston Park areas of Brighton over the last fortnight - including six on Tuesday night alone.

Police have warned families not to leave child seats in cars overnight.

Seats were taken from cars in Edburton Avenue and Dover Road, Brighton, on Tuesday night.

Car stereos were also stolen in Edburton Avenue and Southdown Avenue, and a disabled badge from a car in Middle Road.

Four child seats have been stolen as part of the spree, which follows a series of similar reports of thefts from cars in July.

Inspector Bill Whitehead of Sussex Police said families in the area with child seats should take them indoors overnight, while people being offered them for sale should not buy them.

Two men from the Hollingdean area, aged 25 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of the thefts.

Anyone with information about the crimes or who spots people behaving suspiciously near cars is asked to call Sergeant Chris Lane of Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
