Residents demand Hove facelift

Hove has always been considered the well-kept, quieter, more residential partner to Brighton.

But that image is being damaged by speeding cars, illicit sexual activities in seafront shelters and rusting lampposts.

Speaking at a meeting of the Central Hove Local Action Team (LAT) residents have now called for the area to receive a “facelift”.

LAT chairman and Hove Town Centre Manager, Gavin Stewart, said: “We have now undertaken a visual audit of central Hove and have supplied a list of bollards, lampposts, benches and telecoms boxes that need fixing and repainting.

“Once you start to look you notice more and more things discoloured lampposts, broken benches and telecom boxes that attract graffiti.

“If things get down-at-heel it attracts antisocial behaviour whereas we hope if we give Hove a makeover it will inspire pride.”

Residents have also expressed concern at sexual activities taking place in the seafront shelter in Medina Villas.

Mr Stewart said: “This is an ongoing issue over a number of years.

“Residents are reporting people are going there for illicit activities of a sexual nature so we are working with Sussex Police's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership to look into this.”
