Shock and grief at Hove teacher's death

A teacher described as 'one of the best' by pupils has died suddenly at the age of 41.

Tributes have poured in for popular Mike Fawcett, an English teacher at Blatchington Mill, whose body was found this morning.

The shocking news was announced to pupils who were sent home from the Hove school at lunchtime.

The keen squash player had been at the school in as normal on Tuesday and showed no signs of ill health.

Mr Fawcett, who was a keen squash player and runner and was training to do the Brighton Marathon, had attended his classes as normal on Tuesday and showed no signs of ill health.

But when he failed to arrive at school yesterday morning his sister Jacqui, who is head of music at Blatchington Mill, went with a colleague to his flat in Livingstone Road, Hove.

When Mr Fawcett did not answer the door, she called 999.

Firefighters found his body when they entered the flat.

Two months ago he was rated on a website called ratemyteacher.com as 'one of the best' and someone 'who helped everyone'.

Yesterday, pupils broke down in tears and groups of Mr Fawcett’s former pupils arranged to travel back from university to pay their respects to him.

Headteacher Janet Felkin said: “He was just a wonderful man. He was such an admired and loved member of staff.

“I never knew a child to get upset with him. He was a role model for the students. It has rocked staff, pupils and the whole school community.

“Those in his tutor group, who had been with him for four years, were distraught. He will be greatly mourned and missed.”

Fellow English teacher Naomi Pitkeathly said: “He was such a big personality with so much energy. It is very difficult to believe he is not there any more.

“A few days ago he was telling me how he had jogged along the seafront during the weekend storms.

“He was very active in the drama and music departments and very important to the students. Staff were stricken when they heard it was him.”

Please leave your tribute below.

I can't believe he is gone, but I know that he is in a safe place and won't ever be forgotton. I had him in yr 8 and it is such a shock that he is gone. Everyone liked him and he will be dearly missed in the school. Many of us were crying including some teachers. I couldn't believe it, because I heard someone say that he was dead but I thought it wasn't true. Then we had the assemblys and once I heard the headteacher say Mr Fawcett has Passed away, I just went into tears. For my GCSE's I am going to try and get Good Grades just for Mr Fawcett.
GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS!
R.I.P Mr Fawcett.

Jagiwatch, if you had seen the state everyone was when we heard that our favourite teacher had died, then you'd understand why we were all sent home and the fact the teachers were so distressed as well. Mr Fawcett made such a huge impact on everyone in our school, and he made learning more enjoyable. He always had a smile on his face, and played his guitar during lessons. I wasn't lucky enough to have him for a lesson, but his strong bond with my drama teacher made me see him quite a lot. He was an amazing and inspirational man, and it is such a shock to us all. RIP Sir, you'll never ever be forgotten♥

As an ex-student of Blatchington Mill School, and after both myself and my sister have being taught by Mike Fawcett, I was deeply saddened when i heard this news.
'Mr Fawcett', i think everyone agrees, always had time for everyone, made everyone laugh, and was always smiling. Often he'd 'pop' in to another classroom to say hello to everyone, especially Mr Fitzpatrick and his drama students! This is very unexpected, and words can't come close to the sympathy I have for all who are invloved in his life. A credit to Blatchington Mill School, and I'm postive, a man everyone will miss, and no one will forget. x

RIP Mr Fawcett, I can't believe that you're gone, you were truly the best teacher ever and you will never be forgotten.

Jagiwatch... The reason we were all sent home was because everyone was so distressed that such a valuable member of society has died. he meant so much to all of us. There was hardly anyone who was fit to be in lessons today and you should understand this. Everyone was so upset that such an amazingly talented man had died. Nobody believed the rumours. He was too young. Goodnight sir. You'll always be with me. I'll never forget your smile. You taught everyone so much, even people you didn't actually teach in lessons. There was simply no way that school could continue today. Every single one of the staff knew and loved Mike, and most of us were very distressed, as were a large number of students. The school will be a poorer place for his passing, and though of course we will go on, this will affect everyone for a sigificant time, I'm sure.

Tragic news about a top bloke. I had Mr Fawcett as a substitute english teacher on the passing of our previous teacher. And due to popular demand he took the job full time. He actually had fellow students and I looking forward to our next English lesson or wishing it was a double period. His endless collection of "vintage" Ben Sherman shirts as he called them, in our words "old school" and his loyalty to Rochdale FC are just two of many fond memories. My sister and I had the privledge of having a few beers with him and Fitzy a couple of years ago, out of sheer respect and after 9 years we still called him "sir".
May you Rest in Peace.

Mr Fawcett, I saw you only yesterday when i was leaving school early cos' i was ill. You came out of your classroom because you saw me in the corridor and you came out to see if I was okay. You offered to take my essay and give it to Mrs Pinnick for me when you saw her. I don't know and I don't think you ever got to see her. This morning was so surreal, I was walking to school, I never usually do, and i changed my route just to walk past your house and the wall you always sit on waiting for a lift to school. But you weren't there? The road was so empty without you sitting there on that wall, reading your book. At school, during break, the whole school fell apart... Teachers crying, students confused. At first we didn't know why the teachers were in tears, then rumors started flying round that you had passed. I thought it was some kind of sick joke, i didn't believe it. But it hit home when we got called to assembly and got told. Everyone burst out in tears when it was announced, people screaming, crying, and holding each other for support. The corridors were filled with silent kids with their heads down, in complete shock, if only you were here to see how much you were loved. It just shows what a huge impact you had on us, even some of the year sevens who barely got time to get to know you were devastated. I will miss you picking on me and teasing me as we passed each other in the corridor, and how you always used to jump infront of me in the lunch que. You were such a great teacher and your presence is already greatly missed. Condolences to his family and friends. Love you Mr Fawcett

Mr Fawcett made English come alive for me. From my very first lesson with him in year 7, I felt like he was behind me every step of the way. His lessons were the most interesting and genuinely fun that I ever had. And I know that he is largely responsible for my continued study and love of English. It breaks my heart that more students won't get to experience his teaching, and it breaks my heart that I won't get to thank him in person for everything that he did for me, from lending me books and cds to teaching me how to play Beatles songs on the guitar. He was always a huge inspiration for me, and I always wanted to make him proud. I am so so sorry to his family, who have to cope with the loss of a truly amazing man. Jagiwatch - apology accepted. These kids, as you can see, very much loved Mike, as did the staff. The school as a community will be, unfortunately, rather downbeat for a while now. But I'm sure I speak for us all when we say that we want everyone to come back and get fantastic results to dedicate to the memory of this lovely, kind man, who was the best teacher I've seen - and I'm a lot older than some of the people who are posting their sincerest messages of grief on this sad sad news. To all BMS students - it's truly lovely to see how many of you are so deeply moved by this and I hope you will support each other and the staff throughout this difficult time for the school.

He was just purely amazing. I would never hnave passed GCSE English without him.
He will be throughly missed! For everyone affected, I am truly sorry, and I really hope that his sister, Miss Fawcett, and his Niece, and all the people he loved are all going to be ok.
He was loved by all who knew him, and he touched everyone with his caring and helpfulness around the school.
He was truly amazing, and it's just such an unwanted shock.. Why do bad things happen to good people?

I will never forget him, and the memory of you cycling into C1 with Fitz wondering what on earth he was doing?! And his Mike pencil cup and the picture of him and his sister and a friend stuick up on his wall. And how he said bath in his northern accent. And how he'd wander around playing the guitar. And singing. And everything about him.
And I will always remember the first time I ever met him, him teaching the class his name..." It's a 4, and *he draw a sunset on the board* set.. like a Sunset.. Sooo Mr. Fawcett!!
You could not have affected people more.
Thank you for all the fun times and fond memories,

The feeling today at school and at the sixth form was the most heavy atmosphere i've ever felt, everyone has had their fair share of tears, speechlessness and devastation. Mr Fawcett was well known and loved by all at blatch, even if you were never taught by him you still knew who he was by his happy jolly sense of humour and mood. He put huge grins on everyones faces, with all his funny jokes and stories or even his tricks he did with the school smart cards or with his glasses!
I just want to take this opportunity to thank Mr Fawcett for all the fun times, for being the legend he is and always will be, and for always being there happy and smiling, for helping me with my English revision, the list goes on.
We all love you and always will, i feel priviledged to have spent 5 years of my life learning at Blatch because of you. You will go down in history! Gone but never forgotten, love you always (L) ♥

I, like many others here I imagine have signed up solely to leave our condolences, to show everybody just a snippet of how much he meant to every single person he met. I can honestly say I have never met a single person who has had anything negative to say about him he really was one of those "one in a million" men. I have left my thoughts elsewhere but I felt that I should add to the more public list of people just to emphasise what a great man he was. My heart goes out to his family who I hope can read this and the many many many facebook comments that have been left showing students respects for him. A group on there has grown to 436 members after being up for only a few hours.

I'll always remember you for being positive, and that's how I will be about this situation. I will celebrate the amazing feats you acomplished during your life as opposed to being upset about your death. x

Some teachers don't understand how to be a teacher but he had it down to a T.
I actually looked forward to English and playing 'The Dictionary Game' after a lesson.
Everyone at Blatch adored him.

You told really funny stories, played guitar and sang brilliantly. Thank you so much for making English lessons so much more fun. School won't be the same without you, but we're going to remember you no matter what. Walking past your room today was hard, the door was shut and it was in darkness, unlike it usually is.. open with the lights on and your friendly face smiling out from within. I too, like LouisD have only signed up to this so I can pay my respects. Mr Fawcett was my son's form teacher all through Blatchington Mill a few years ago. I was therefore fortunate enough to meet Mr Fawcett on many occasions and always used to leave he's company smiling. He was an incredibly nice man and he had a massive impact on my son's school days. If ever you saw him out of school he spoke to you like you were a friend rather than the mother of one of he's pupils. I really hope that in time he's family get the opportunity to read all of these messages as I'm sure it will just reinforce what they already new, what a wonderful man he was. My thoughts are with he's family and close friends, what a terrible terrible loss, far too early!! Safe Journey Mr Fawcett, Penny xx

I miss Blatch a lot now I've moved to a different college, but I can't imagine what it must be like after this. It's hours and hours after I found out and it's still not sunk in. I remember him tripping himself up and blaming other students when he wandered into my music and English lessons... Ms. Fawcett was my music teacher, and she too is a great teacher herself, I can't imagine what she must be feeling like. Mr. Fawcett was my English and Drama teacher for three years and truly my favourite teacher. Always happy, always smiling, always funny. Not only to be remembered for his teaching, he was clearly a good brother, uncle and friend to those around him.

I remember his story of annoyance as he threw a pencil behind him in class and it flew straight into the pen pot and yet no one was there to see it!

Or the way he would break out into a class sing-song of 'Postman Pat' with his guitar he would keep in his cupboard (the cupboard with a giant poster of Bob Dylan on the inside!) and would always make things brighter when you knew you had him later on in the day.

Although only halfway through your life, Mr. Fawcett, you achieved more than most could even think of. Hundreds of children prepared and ready for the lives ahead of them, enriched with your teaching and support. You were clearly very close to your friends and your family and all of our thoughts are with them now at this hard time.

But we now have something to guide us that Mike Fawcett never had - his example.

God bless.

I got a text from my friend this morning me telling me the news and at first I didn't believe it. I thought it was some rumour that was going around but when she and another one of my friends confirmed it to be true, I genuinely didn't know what to do. My first thought was how much he is going to be missed by everyone that knew him! I thought of his sister Jacquie and of his fellow collegues, especially Mr Fitz-Patrick who I know he was close to. I then text my sister who had him as a form tutor for 5 years. He always made time for everyone and always tried to help in any way possible. He had such a good and kind heart.
He used to call my sister Scottie and when I introduced myself to him as Charlotte Scott's sister he nicknamed me "Little Scottie". I didn't know him all that well but whenever I saw him he was always smiling and gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. And just by doing one small thing by calling me by my nickname it made me feel special. I thank him for that.

Mike was one of the most amazing colleagues I have ever worked with. My time at "Blatch" was indeed a special time, but Mike added real sparkle to each day - so funny, warm, talented and incredibly concerned about all the youngsters he taught. Mike wanted each student to be cared for, looked after and celebrated. He had an amazing skill for making each person feel special. A child was never a number, always an individual that Mike was interested in. He was a great teacher and talented musician. Every day (I was at "Blatch" for 10 years), Mike made me laugh. He would wander into my classroom with a guitar and sing his latest song or play some new chord progression that he loved at that time. Everyone was cheered up by Mike. He was so faithful to his friends. I am deeply saddened by this news. Mike, you have been an inspiration to me. I love ya!

In response to "jagiwatch, Hove" ...

Although I left Blatch in July, after being there 7 years I know what a huge part Mike's personality added to the spirit of the school and college. He really wasn't just your average teacher...You couldn't not like him! He was one of those very few people who could blend teacher and friend, whilst commanding absolute respect of position. I have no doubts that the shocking news affected every single member of staff big-time. So much so that there would be absolutely no way of: A) keeping your mind on teaching, and B) keeping circa 1500 children under control, all of which would naturally be affected in similar ways.

If there's an excuse to shut a school for the AFTERNOON (come on - it wasn't even a full day!), this has to be it.

I'm sure you can now see how simply, there was no other option.

Jude Obermuller.

A man who always put himself out for the happiness and comfort of others. His talents as an English teacher aside, he helped me through some tricky times whilst I was at school. Also a dedicated and fantastic guitarist, he introduced me to music which I'd never have otherwise listened to (We once had a discussion for hours about two chords...). In 6th form, he'd often stroll into our music lessons (taught by his sister) with his lunch, and tell us some musical trivia in the naturally hilarious witty way he had with words. He told the best stories!! All my thoughts and wishes are with his family. Undoubtedly, he will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

The man who took the chore out of Chaucer... outstanding teacher, passionate musician, amazing man.

Having worked at Blatchington Mill for a couple of years I was very sad to read of Mike Fawcett's sudden death. He was a teacher who was rarely seen without a student in tow and never without a huge smile on his face. With an obvious, genuine love of teaching and all his pupils, it is not surprising that so many have taken the trouble to write their memories down. Occasionally, I covered a lesson for him and he would always make a point of finding out how the lesson had gone. I would always have to tell him the students were disappointed he had been away- another telling sign of how inspiring and loved he was! I do hope all these comments are a comfort to his close family and friends and through their grief they will be able to celebrate his life, knowing he touched the llives of, in particular, so many young people. From watching shrek and singing hallelujah as a class, the dictionary game, singing "elisaaa, elisaaa" as you hand me my folder, your clay pipe collection that nasty teacher stole, sitting with me all through break on several occasions making sure my essay was perfect, waving at me as you cycled down sackville road many times, chatting to you in hove park the other week about college, talking to you before extended day when i was early, the photos of you and your loving family around your classroom, your stories of past students and your entire happy presence, ALL of these memories and more will stay with me forever. I dont want to believe this terrible news, you were more than just a teacher to everyone, especially me. your generosity and enthusiasm is inspiring and respectful. all my love to your family, friends and anyone else as greatly affected by your passing as us. This was a man who was such a beloved teacher and who will never know the full extent of his work. He has done what every teacher I know wishes to do and that is make a difference in people's lives. He was more then a teacher to some students, he was a friend; and his friends are still in shock over what happen. If it wasn't for Mr. Mike Fawcett I would never of found my love for William Blake or Shakespeare and would of never passed English in either GCSE or A Level! He started my love with books and the english language. I feel deep sympathy to all of his loved ones whether they be friends or family or students (past and present) and my condolences to those unfortunate enough to of never met this great mind. You will never know how much I owe you in life and although it seems to little to late, the only way I can sum all this up is:

Thank you Mike.

I still can't believe this is true. Mr Fawcett taught me english for nearly all my time at blatch and over the years was easily the best teacher I've had, always kind, encouraging and hilarious. I'll never forget how friendly and cheerful he was, he could make the worst days the best just with a chat. He was loved by everyone that met him and I think the volume of messages has proved it. I am so sorry for his family and friends, he was a legend and will be missed by all.

When I was a fairly dim-witted year 8, I placed down as an excuse for lateness that my watch had frozen and I had read the time as 7:30am for two hours. Mr Fawcett had read this in the reception and had found it funny enough to tell his classes that day about it, recounted back to me by a friend in one of them. To make an incredibly funny person like himself amused, albeit by embarassing youthful stupidity, is a warm memory I have of a wonderful person.

I was a student of Mr Fawcett's about 10 years ago which should demonstrate what a wonderful effect this great teacher had on the students of Blatch who were lucky enough to get him as their English teacher. I am now living in Sydney and working for a magazine so he should know that those hours of encouraging me and pushing me to do better have finally paid off!!! I am so saddened by the news of his passing and can appreciate how devastated staff and students alike must be feeling. Mike Fawcett was a great man and will be sadly missed, even by those who haven't been taught by him in many years and from across the globe. RIP and my sincere condolences to the family - Michelle

As part of the then 'Northern contingent' at Blatch with myself and Mel Wilde, we all had a great laugh. I'm so, so, sad to hear this news as I know how much the kids and staff loved Mike, he was such a naturally gifted teacher.

The way you greeted everyone you met and make them feel welcome was incredible, even those who found school a confusing and terrifying time felt comfortable in your classroom. Truly an amazing man!!

All of the students and staff at Blatch adored him and he will be very sorely missed - a huge loss for his family, the school community and the teaching profession.

My heart goes out to Jacquie and the rest of Mike's family, I cannot begin to imagine their pain when those who knew him professionally and as their teacher are so distraught.

Mike, you must rest in peace now and I hope that, somehow, you can know just how many people's lives you have touched in such a huge way.

I will never forget the lessons where he would take out his guitar and start playing to 'motivate us' as he called it. I think he just enjoyed getting everyone involved in a sing along. I always used to see him in the same place near george street and when i left in year 11 he wrote 'p.s see you in the usual place' in my leavers book. Its sad to know he won't be around anymore. Where do I start...Mike was my English teacher in years 11, 12, and 13, but acted more like a friend who we just happened to learn a hell of a lot from.
I see his picture, and all I can do is laugh! He was one of the funniest people I've ever known, with such a passion for everything he cared about, and such an inspiration to so many people.
Already on facebook, my classmates are quoting him for his hilarious catchphrases such as "JUSTICE" "Brrrread Sandwich!" and his many many random quotations from Titanic at totally strange moments!

I remember being very upset in class one day with a personal issue. He stopped the class, took me outside, and asked if I was ok. I told him briefly what was wrong, and he told me I could come and chat whenever I wanted. He asked if I was ok to come back in, and I felt so much better knowing that it was ok by him that I was having a bad day. He was so thoughtful and was always the teacher who made me smile.

I am absolutely devistated that such a young, kind, enthusiatic and wonderful teacher has left us, but his memory will live on for such a long time, through the many many staff, pupils and friends to whom he made such a difference.

My Daughter attends Blatch and she was always talking about her favourite teacher "Mr Fawcett". She was devastated by the tragic news yesterday and still hasn't really taken it all in.

Having read all the wonderful tributes paid to Mr Fawcett on this site I can see what she meant. I wish I could have been in one of his classrooms.

I do hope Mr Fawcetts family get a chance, in time, to read all of the heartfelt tributes from the Staff, Students and members of the general public who have been truly touched by such an "inspirational" man.

May I offer my condolences to his family and my support to all the staff at BMS who have been clearly devastated by this tragic event.

Our daughter left Blatch a few years ago and Mike Fawcett was her form teacher. I had the good fortune to end up having a real good chat with Mike after a parents' eveing - talking about life and kids and music. He even gave me a copy of the vinyl single he'd cut with his band. He was a top bloke, no question. He also made a real difference to my daughter's life at Blatch, and I regret the fact that I never got around the thanking him properly for taking good care of her through her teenage years in a 1600-strong school. Mike was everything that was good about being a teacher - respected by the kids, a good laugh, but never trying to be 'down with them', a great role model, and I'm glad he put his natural talents to teaching. His death is a huge and painful loss to the teaching profession and to all the young people to whom he dedicated his time. As a family we feel very saddened by this tragedy. I hope his own family are comforted during this terrible time by the spontaneous outpouring of love and respect for Mike that has been posted here.

My heart goes out to all the people Mike knew and loved. He was an amazing man that didn't have a bad bone in his body. He always brought laughter and love to his work and happiness to everyone he met. It seems so unfair for such a caring, kind man to have left us all so unexplained and suddenly. He has however, left a lot of good memories of fun, musical, happy times for us all to remember and I want to thank him for being the most positive, upbeat and happy man i have ever been lucky enough to meet. You will be missed by everyone mike and my condolences go out to your family and close friends x x x

Although we are sad heaven is happier now. Keep on playing that guitar all the way to the gates sir.

I cannot stop crying. These tributes are so moving. I miss you so much. Just knowing that I will never see your smile again is making me cry :(

You touched our hearts.

I was taught by Mr Fawcett about four years ago for years 10 and 11. He was the funniest, most relaxed and clever man I can remember. I loved his english classes. He taught so well, there was no misbehaviour in his classes, he was so witty and quick. He made learning poetry for exams fun! Haha. I haven't seen him for years, but when I heard the news I was so upset. He was so genuine and lovely.
Will never forget your smiling face sir!

Mr Fawcett,
The most inspirational, funniest teacher i have ever known!Mr fawcett you were such an amazing teacher and you wil never be forgotten. When i found out about the news i was shocked it was only tuesday that I was in Drama, laughing and having fun with the peices we had produced. The tears were almost never ending when the news was announced in assembly. I had such a great time that Tuesday at extended day, I remember your big smile and your childish jokes you allways brought a smile to everyones face. You gave the school such a warm feeling. It still has'nt sunken in, the fact that you are truly gone, standing outside with a few friends after extended day at about 8:20 waiting for a lift, when i saw you walk down the stairs towards the car park, I will never forget your smile as you said " have a lovely evening, see you girls tomorrow" Its soo hard to beleive that as we saw you walking out of the car park, never in a million years would I have thought that, that was the last. You will allways be remebered not only by me but everyone who remembers you and your wonderfull personality. Thanks for being such a great teacher and making me feel so confident in Drama. There is never going to be a teacher as special as you and I hope that somewhere you are are still smiling, making funny jokes and playing the guitar. Sending you and your family tonnes of love and respect. I should probably stop babling on now, but just to say you will allways be in my heart xx.

I was in his English class this monday, and we had two English lessons, period 1 and 5, both of which are probably the only reasons I could bring myself to actually love mondays. When I saw him then he was as he has ever been, with a constant smile on his face, and one of the most friendly, helpful and enthusiastic people I have ever met, let alone one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by. His attitude and the little things he did to brighten up every single moment of time in his lessons made school worth enjoying. Rest in peace Mr. Fawcett, I'll remember you as you always were, the most friendly and charismatic person I've ever met.

So Mr Fawcett,
I don't think anyone has taken it in. He really, truly was the best teacher. He was my English teacher this year. I'd only had him three months. It's not fair for me or anyone. I'm in so much devastation it's hard to think of the apprpriate tribute to leave for you that would sum it up rightly. Well thank you would be a good start. He taught us on Tuesday. The day before he died. Semi colons and colons were that lessons topic. I now have a new point of view on English due to him. He was too funny. I remember he told a joke like this "I had a small lizard. He was my newt." I didn't get this and was asking my neighbour to explain it to me. He saw me confused and explained that it sounded like "minute" but was meant as "my newt". His chamones, meows always made me chuckle and there wasn't a single lesson I didn't laugh come to think of it. His guitar in lessons helped me wrote the best stories I could. I hope he was proud of me and everyone else. I know everyone who knew him is in despair but we know he was loved if you just look at the comments left. Thank you Mr Fawcett. Greatly missed and loved. I can't believe he is gone, but I know that he is in a safe place and won't ever be forgotton. I had him in yr 8 and it is such a shock that he is gone. Everyone liked him and he will be dearly missed in the school. Many of us were crying including some teachers. I was very sad to hear about Mike. I went to school with Mike in Rochdale and he had a great sense of humour. My best memory of him was being around at his house having a water fight with another friend Jonhny. I was hidden around the back of Mikes house waiting with my water pistol when he lent out of the bathroom window with a bowl full of freezing water and dropped it on me. After getting over the shock we could not stop laughing. Mike was so funny and the brightest kid in the class by far. I was really pleased to hear he had become a teacher. I was really touched to see so many messages from his pupils. Mike will be missed. RIP Mike
