New Brighton Pavilion Tory candidate: "I can win"

Charlotte Vere says she believes she can win at the next election after being selected as the Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion.

Mrs Vere, from southwest London was selected from six finalists in an “open primary” staged by the Brighton Pavilion Conservative Association (BPCA).

Mrs Vere, who has been closely involved with the campaigns of environmentally minded millionaire Tory Zac Goldsmith, emerged victorious.

The, said: “It has been a huge experience over the past two weeks. I wasn’t on the first shortlist, I was a reserve. We have a huge fight ahead of us but it’s a fight I believe we can win.”

She will now contest the general election, expected in May, in what is anticipated to be one of the closest constituencies in the country.

It is held by retiring Labour MP David Lepper by a 5,000 majority.

The seat has also been made the top target of the Green Party and national leader Caroline Lucas has been brought in to contest it.

After the selection, BPCA chairwoman Carol Ramsden said: “Charlotte is going to be brilliant. The fact it went to the wire showed how strong a field there was.”

A candidate who lives in London!

Just shows the Conservatives are out of touch with the electorate. At least Lepper is a local guy, though I won't be voting for him and his useless party.

UKIP for me at the next GE.

Yeah because UKIP are really in touch with the electorate aren't they? They're just even more out of touch ex-tories as far as i can see. They make the main part MPs look sanctimonious when it comes to expenses claims.

I hope that she keeps the dreadful Green Party out.

Odd how this 'event' was reported on the Argus website on Wednesday, and again today.
It's almost as if the Argus is actively trying to drum up support for the Tories...

A lot of people who live in Brighton have moved down from Lodon

Will she live locally?
There are a number of MPs across the UK who get elected to a seat and never, ever live in it, they just hold it.
Many of the seats in safe counties are held by non-resident MPs.
People must find out before they vote for any candidate.

south west london is hardly far from brighton, and i am sure anyone would be only to pleased to move down. I think she sounds great, and we do not want the single policy green party to get a hold, the city will grind to a halt as we are all forced on to our bikes. zac goldsmith is an environmental champion so her involvement will give her good green credentials alongside other good policies.

bug eye. I am asking her the question. Is she moving down here.
Many of the Home Counties blue seats (west London outwards)are held by Tories who hold the seats yet never move to the seats. I lived in a Tory constituency in West London where the MP had an office and attended surgeries once a month, but when you tried to contact him or talk of local issues, he did not have a clue. He could talk of national policy, but he did not get involved in local issues.
I am sure this is the same for other parties, I am not being biased against this lady as a Tory.
I ask the question again, to her, will you be moving to Brighton as your permanent residence?

..doesn't really matter where she lives...they could put up a carrot and it would win....a 2010 Tory landslide....then the economy rears its head again as Browns printed money solution for 2009's problems comes home to roost....just like it did in Zimbabwe!
