Man who killed student in Hastings kebab shop race row jailed

A 22-year-old man who killed a teenage Arab student following a racist row in Hastings was jailed for four-and-a-half years today.

A judge said George Austin and his two co-defendants were a "terrible advertisement to the youth of this country" following the death of Mohammed al-Majed.

George Austin describes to police how he punched Mohammed al-Majed.

Austin's single punch sent 16-year-old Mohammed, from Qatar, flying on to the pavement, where he cracked his head and suffered massive head injuries.

The teenager died in hospital three days after the attack outside a kebab shop on the seafront on August 22 last year.

Austin, who was convicted of manslaughter following a three-and-a-half-week trial at Lewes Crown Court last month, showed no emotion as he was sentenced.

Austin's co-defendants, Paul Rockett, 22, and Alexander Quinn, 19, were found guilty of racially aggravated common assault and wounding with intent respectively.

Locking up all three, Judge Anthony Scott-Gall told them that Mohammed's life was "needlessly and senselessly snuffed out by an unforgivable act of violence".

I'm sure that anyone who fought back against such a thug would get a HELL of a lot longer and WE allow it -

What the F**K !!!!!!! This thug has been given totally the WRONG message- How can the judiciary justify giving this sentence to someone who has killed another human being in a racist attack? Whether or not this was premeditated, it was the result of intent to seriously injury another human being. Since when did manslaughter warrant a four and a half year sentence?
I am at a total loss to know what the so called 'justice' system of this country is about. The family of this poor boy must be devastated, not just by the death of their child but the pathetically short sentence given to his killer.
The abuse of the system by these thugs and their legal representatives to get short sentences for major crimes is a national disgrace.
The intimidation, assault and often robbery of foreign students is well known to all police forces along the south coast- when are they going to let the local thugs know they will not get away with it?

This sentence must be referred back to court as it is just not long enough.
I hope the family of the dead young man make the appeal against the sentence.
This thug should do at least ten years.

I agree with the above coments, but I voted with my feet as you can see I don't live in the UK any more, it is f*ck*d, I am sorry too say. Here in Bellarus there are loads of police and plenty of space in the prisons unlike the UK. If this thug was hear and did this crime, he would not be out of prison in 2-2.5 years. My heart goes out to the family and friends, I am ashamed of the UK and it will not get better for a long time to come.

Disgraceful. Is this really the message we want to give out? Kill another human being and you will get a mere 4 and a half years? Scum like this need to be locked up for decades. Not, what will inevitably be a couple of years after his sentence is halved. This country is a joke, something needs to be done other wise I will join the increasing numbers of people who will be leaving this joke of a country.

Hmmm I totally agree with what everyone here is saying, but not fully. Firstly, it was manslaughter - not murder. I imagine (although of course I'm not sure) that he didn't plan on killing this person, people on kill with intent get life sentences. This guy - in my view - has got off VERY lightly tho. I'd say 10 years with no parole, no parole mainly because it was racially motivated. 4 and half years is a joke.

Also, if you guys think this country is so messed up why you don't you move - you won't find the grass is greener on the other side. Some people take everything this country offers far to much for granted.

If this shi@bag has been on remand for a year, he could be out in 18 months. If that was a member of my family that he had killed i wouldnt sleep untill he was in a box.

They probably think the same as the British public do. It stinks of softness always shown to the criminal, and no thought given to the victim or their familys. "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime"
Yeah right Gordon!
The public are outraged at this soft sentence!

I find it odd that only 1 or 2 people have said they would kill him, only if it had happened to a member of their family. Yet a lot of people said they like to see limping Keiron Bobbette strung up. Funny sort of tabloid justice some of you propose. Does anyone know what the maximum sentence is for manslaughter? It cant be too much i expect. It is of course a disgrace to get that sentence. Bullies.

I'm no expert, but i think you'll find the maximum sentence for manslaughter,is life imprisonment.

Presumably if there was no racial dimension to this crime,he'd have received even less of a sentence.Didn't look too remorseful in that taped interview either did he.

Then these thugs should have got the maximum for manslaughter. Depends what 'life' actually is though.
