Lightning storms flicker over Brighton

People driving home this evening have spotted lightning flickering over Brighton and Hove.

The city could be in for a repeat of last nights thunder, lightning and hail storms.

Sara Brown of Rottingdean woke up this morning to find a lightning bolt had brought her roof down.

The turbulent weather that has plagued the county for the last two weeks looks set to continue over the weekend.

The MET Office are predicting at least three days of heavy rain.

A spokesman said: "There is a moderate risk of severe weather affecting southern England.

"Heavy rain is expected to spread eastwards during Saturday morning.

"This is likely to give 25-30 mm of rain locally, falling on to already saturated ground."

Send your photos of the lightning storms to The Argus by putting SUPIC as the message headline and texting it to 80360.

I also saw a big lorry on the A27 with flashing lights and uncollected bin bags on Ditchling Road.
This is as bad as the story about the man with computers in his batchelor pad.
The Argus is becoming very weird.

Yes Argus, we know what lightning is. Seen it before. It's NOT news! In fact there was some over Heathfield last year!

how long can we keep this going?

so could only drivers in cars see the lightening then?

Oh for gawds sake... a bit of thunder and lightning.. it's hardly news is it really. If it had been a violent storm with a tornado or water spout thrown in for excitement then it might have been worth reporting. Might I suggest you send some reporters to a rainforest where thunder & lightning is as common as shopping in Tescos but far more potent than the storms we get here!

Ha but of course! That's almost as amazing as the fact that Sara Brown from Rottingdean managed to sleep through a lightning attack on her own roof!

Wow! Weather, now who would have expected that?
We should all stay indoors and only travel if absolutely necessary..

I didn't see lightning but i did see a little silhouetto of a man scaramouche scaramouche

Glad you spotted that too Worthinglogic, I thought i was imagining it...Never heard of anyone waking up to find their roof had fallen in. She must have been on the strongest sleeping pills known to mankind.

I also liked the "A spokesman said: "There is a moderate risk of severe weather affecting southern England." So British. Never do anything by extremes.

would you also complain IF you had suffered dreadful weather and you weren't told.

Too many here think only news apertaining to them should be here - do they also believe the sun is in orbit around their egos?

While stuck in the daily traffic jam last night between, Roedean and Rottingdean along the A259, it did provide us with a free light show to while away the time whilst stationary.

Perhaps if on Thursday morning, after the storm during Wednesday night the cynics on this page had turned up at their local bank to find they were unable to draw money, or to their local supermarket to find it closed, or to their place of work to find electrical equipment including computers were out of action, or were unable to return to sleep because of car alarms going off, they wouldn't have found it so funny.
And to mock the lady who had a fortunate escape is despicable.

Presumably, those who have commented 'this is news?' have the same attitude to all of the media output which has covered the unprecedented weather being experienced over the last couple of weeks?

Unprecedented? Really, as in never happened before? The floods in the NW were described as a once in a 1000 years - I'm sure much worse weather has happened before and will again, but hardly draws the 'unprecedented' label ;)

Saffron, Rottingdean says...

The floods may not have been unprecedented but the amount of rainfall in such a short period was. To put the amount in perspective it was the amount of rainfall we would expect to get here during 6 months!

No, you're quite right of course. But then we wouldn't be reading about it in an online paper would we. And even if we were, it wouldn't make any difference. Lighten up!

Come on, stop "raining down" abuse on us. This is a silly story. And in other news today a man in Gloucester fell in a puddle. I like the idea of my a bank being struck by lightning though... Kerching! Hmm, is there any way to stage lightning? Maybe the Theatre Royal has some going spare.

Folks don't get the headline mixed up with the story. The headline's about the lightning, the story's about the amount of rainfall, which is substantial and up for debate.

Saffron, Rottingdean says...
12:41pm Sat 28 Nov 09

I think I have found an explanation for the differing views and the scepticism of those living in Brighton and to the west. Speaking to someone today who lives in Brighton but works in Rottingdean she said that the storm was barely noticeable. However she says that many people she has spoken to who live in Rottingdean and Saltdean have told her that they found one episode, obviously the one which damaged the lady's roof and sent debris into a bedroom below, extremely frightening. And the pictures which appeared in Friday's paper edition of the Argus indicates the damage.

So, it is understandable that some of you would think it was a fuss about nothing. But it was not a silly story for some people. And those of you who mock in ignorance should take a 'rain' or should it be a 'thunder' check.

It's global warming, we're all doomed I tell you, doomed!
No really look listen, it really is just weather, and probably no worse than it has ever been; just that our memories tend to be convenient when we think about the subject.
As my old Mum used to say 'There's no such thing as bad weather, just innapropriate clothing'.
