A prime shopping site could lay empty for months following the collapse of bookshop Borders.

The chain, which was put into administration on Thursday, has a large store in Churchill Square.

It will continue to trade while administrators MCR try to find a buyer but, even though the site is bound to be very popular with potential retailers, legal wrangles could mean it lies empty for some time.

Despite Churchill Square having a waiting list of businesses looking to move in, the former Zavvi store has been empty for almost a year.

Brighton town centre manager Soozie Campbell said this was due to complications that occur when a large chain goes into administration and the same could happen with Borders.

No one from Churchill Square was available for comment.
