Brighton school one of "most improved" in country

Teachers are celebrating after their school was named as one of the most improved in the country.

Peter Gladwin Primary School, in Drove Road, Portslade, was highlighted by the Government as one of the 100 top schools for the amount its pupils improved between the ages of seven and 11.

The results featured in Standard Assessment Test (Sats) results tables published yesterday Peter Gladwin headteacher Catherine Keith said: “This reflects the hard work of the whole school community.

“Most importantly this improvement has been achieved through the development of an exciting and creative curriculum that has enriched and enhance the children's learning.

“We are looking forward to having a celebration with the children to coincide with the completion of our building programme another exciting development for our school and local community.”Other schools which saw improvements were St Mark’s CE Primary School and St Paul’s CE Primary School, both in Brighton.

However some schools received poorer results.

Whitehawk Primary School in Whitehawk Road, Brighton, was ranked in the bottom 200 primary schools in the country.

Headteacher Daniel Weiner, who took over at the school in December last year, said: “I am determined to improve both teaching and learning because children at this school deserve the very best.”

In Brighton and Hove 79% of pupils reached Level 4 in English and maths and 90% achieved the result in science.

I guess The Argus readership is full of quite negative people, hence the lack of comments on this article. I don't know the school, but it's great news that there is something to be proud of in Brighton (well Portslade actually). Well done everyone. More positivity please!

"More positivity please!"... 'Fraid not, there's nothing postitive to be said about the educational cancer of league tables.

Whilst shallow and insular headteachers such as Ms Keith phone up the local rag for some cheap publicity, other schools such as Whitehawk Primary School will continue to be named and shamed.

Hmm, I wonder why the latter school might be languishing, Portsmouth-like, in the divisive 'league table' system?

Could it have something to do with the fact that it serves an extremely deprived area? Oh yes! What a surprise!

And which schools top the table a la Chelsea F.C.? Oh yet another surprise! In the most part they are schools based in leafy suburbs served by middle class parents.

It's not exactly rocket scence.

Ms Keith, next time, before giving yourself such a public self-congratulatory pat on the back, spare a minute for the staff and children going through the mill at the schools "below"(ARGHH!) you because headteachers like you give credence to this flawed and repulsive 'league table' system.

While, as a teacher, I am no fan of the league tables, I should point out that the do measure more than just results. While I am not sure of the case for primary schools, secondary schools do have a league table based on something called 'value added' which does take into account the intake that the school recieves. (This was the table on which PCC did so poorly last year). While it's not perfect, it does give a far fairer impression of progress than you are leading people to believe.

I know this school well. It is a fantastic, calm, inclusive and inspiring school with a wonderful head teacher and a very dedicated and talented team of staff. The school's success is well deserved and the result of a great deal of hard work. Congratulations!

Do you know Ms Keith personally ? Presumably not, judging by your inaccurate comments about her personality.
Do you know that Ms Keith 'phoned up the local rag' ? Presumably not, as it is far more likely the contact would have been from the paper or via the local authority.
Do you know where Peter Gladwin school actually is ? Absolutely not, if you liken it to a leafy suburb, the equivalent of Chelsea FC in the league tables.
I don't care much for league tables either, rather my own observations from which I know is that Peter Gladwin is a wonderful school run by excellent staff, so perhaps the league tables are more accurate than you think. Either way, they should not be used as a vehicle for completely unjustified and inaccurate comments about an individual teacher.
