Woman dead after A27 crash

A woman has been killed after colliding with another car and a tree this morning.

Police were called at 9am to the scene of a crash involving two cars on the A27 outside The White Swan pub in Arundel.

A 30-year-old woman, from Worthing, who was driving a blue Saab suffered serious head injuries and was extracted from her car and rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where she later died.

Two men in the other vehicle, who were 44 and 83 years old, were taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester with serious injuries.

The area is still being investigated but the road has now reopened.

When is there NOT a crash. Some people on the A23 and A27, and surrounding roads, drive like manics (obviously I do not know the details here). When are people going to learn. Take your time, your life is worth more than 10 minutes less travelling time and not being aware.

It must be a serious crash if it outside the Swan as it is some distance from the A27.

good point, but i would assume that they are using this as a reference point people would know. A27/A23 are popular accident spots, mainly because so many people are in a rush nowadays, and these roads cannot cope with the amount of traffic on them. you really need to give yourself more time to get to where you are going, and relax. a stressed driver is the worst driver. you can see them every day, hanging onto the car in front, trying to push past, flashing lights, ignoring road signs and traffic lights. calm down out there, and have a safe christmas everyone.

From what I have just read there is no mention of the A23.
The White Swan is on the A27 at Arundel and is on the stretch of single carriageway before the Arundel to Fontwell part.

you are correct. i think the point stevep and i were trying to make is that these are the 2 roads that are always being mentioned when it comes to 'incidents'. that stretch of road is dangerous, as you get people trying to push in at the end of the dual carriageway, approaching Arundel from Fontwell, or people trying to barge past onto the twin lanes. if i remember rightly, the bit by the pub has a double white line down the middle, and, of course, no-one should be crossing that. like i said earlier, to much impatience nowadays. hope the lady is ok.

Saab 9-3. One of the better cars to crash into trees with, thanks to its five star Euro N-Cap rating.

Umm think you are confused as to where you are as the White Sawn is ON the A27 and it is about time something was done about this stretch of road, I often have to pull out of the Park farm exit and people come so fast down off the dual carriageway, there are footpaths crossing the road and lots of turnings, it should be a 40 mile an hour limit and the single lane should start further back. The accidents wont stop until something happens, this part of the road has been closed at least 5 times this year how many more needs to happen before something is done???

Why bring someone from there to the RSCH, is this the best way to deal with an accident victim, to bring them 24 miles for treatment?

Kimble says...

They went by helicopter so I doubt it took to long to get there - and I guess it was the best equipt to handle the injuries. I think the emergency service must have thought it through!

A sad incident before at any time. RIP.
Yes the White Swan is on the A27 but in the original story it was The Swan which is not.

Once again Davy Boy makes a comment and balls things up. The A27 is still the A27 here and just because it has not been duelled does not mean it is any other road.

The real villains in this sorry death are the 1) Political and Green elite who have refused over the years to make the A27 at this point a proper duel C/W road, using 'water voles' in nearby fields as an excuse not to bring the bulldozers in. HOW MANY MORE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THIS MAJOR TRUNK ROAD IS FIT FOR PURPOSE???

Secondly Dee Zelastra's point though cruel is indeed fair.To die in a Saab 93 (late model) you would have been having to drive at warp factor 9 to actually face so much damage.

Lastly , all I can say is watch out for polish Bus, coach and lorry drivers in the area. Every morning a school bus careers down towards the roundabout at the Ford road junction with no care for speed, road positioning , mobile in hand and customary 'fag on the go'.

YOU have been warned!

Lastly, be sure to visit my animal charity shop (if its still there) on Boundary road Portslade (near the level crossing)

It's not more duel-carriage ways we need it's better driving skills, just look at how many crashes happen on the a27 by southwick tunnel which is a duel-carriage way!.

A DUAL carriageway would make for safer driving. On single carriageways, motorist that travel at speeds too slow act as a catalyst for others to take silly risks to get passed. A DUEL carriageway indicates there is a battle!!! If you want to comment on things, at least spell the word correctly!!!

...you mean "take silly risks to get PAST". If you're going to take others to task for their spelling, it is incumbent on you to get yours right too! And let us not even mention the perverse tortuous grammar in "motorist that travel at speeds too slow act as a catalyst for others"... which sounds like yet another unfathomable Confucian proverb!

Oh very sorry (not) if I had just got in from work and was mega tired hence used the wrong spelling of a word, however having witnessed the way a lot of the motorists use DUAL carriage-ways I think duel carriage-way is more than appropriate!.

i was merely pointing out that these 2 roads are the ones most mentioned when it comes to incidents. i know thatwhere this happened is the A27, and am fully conversant with the geography of the area. i did live in and around sussex for many years, and my point was to show that these two major roads appear to be the most dangerous. i do realise that Arundel is nowhere near the A23. i agree that the road needs dualling all the way through, with Arundel being completely by-passed.

I was driving late at night on saturday on the A27 from Chichester to Worthing. The rain was so bad I could barely see anything. Myself and many other drivers stuck to around 50mph as the flooding on the roads was very bad....HOWEVER there were still idiots racing along at 80mph+....at one point i overtook a car doing about 30mph and a car behind me was right up my backside swerving from left to right and putting his full beams on. Why are people so stupid!!!! Wish the police would patrol roads like this in bad weather conditions as people think its a game!
Anyway...my rant over

My condolences to the family.

I was driving this stretch Friday evening and it was howling with wind and rain then. I only drive a rather ancient Ford Escort and handling and brakes in the rain aren't as good as modern cars yet I still had some eejit in a van tail-gating me because it felt safer to do 50mph than the 60mph limit in the conditions.

I think most would agree what we need are more cops policing bad driving, not just speeding.

Anyway, rest in peace.

I cannot believe that out of 21 comments only 2 are with reference to the deceased. For those of you who sit behind their PC's into the early hours with nothing else to do but to comment where it is not needed - grow up! and contribute something to society for a change!

What so people are idiots Just because they discuss these roads and the accidents that happen on them? Does this mean they are intentionally being hurtful?
-
Last time I checked the A27 was a PUBLIC road that we all use and so all have an interest when it comes to fatal accidents..
-
Davyboy had you not thought that the reason many accidents are reported on these roads is because they are the two main routes in Sussex!??!

What an appalling incident. Condolences to the family. So sad that a family suffers especially so close to Christmas.

I always fail to understand why the Argus open up forums on reports of this nature. Such a pity that the dregs of the society we live in use articles like this to have petty squables and air their opinions. There is a time & place. I hope you don't one day find yourselves in the position of the family involved. Shame on you.

A colleague has just told me of the awful news.
Firstly I had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful outgoing person some 4 years ago. she was always smiling, she never forgot and name or face and what’s more nothing was ever a problem.

To her family we all offer you our Condolences as she will be truly missed but remembered.

And to all those that make comments, please can you just remember this was a wonderful person, and some of your comments could be taken the wrong way, how would you truly feel if this was your mother, sister or family member and these comments were being made? I’m sure it would make you sick having people judge them without knowing them.(and you know it)

So please if you have nothing pleasant to say, say nothing at all.
