Heavy traffic on A27 after smash

Heavy traffic is still on the A27 in the Falmer and Hollingbury area because of a five vehicle crash.

Long delays are expected as the authorities try and clear the wreckage.

The A27 westbound carriageway between the A270 Lewes Road and A23 London Road has been blocked after the crash, involving four cars and van, at 8am.

Crews have managed to reopen one lane of the road but there is still congestion to the Southerham Roundabout.

A Sussex Police spokesman said the crash wasn't serious.

Fire crews were called and had to cut one person out of the wreckage.

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said three people were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with minor injuries.

Why don’t they make tail-gating an offence? Just a thought.

It amazes me to see so many accidents on the roads at this time of year. Do drivers not realise that the conditions are that bad, that they do not drive to the conditions of the road. I feel these accidents can be nullified if only drivers "switch on" and take care and consideration. I was driving along the 27 today and it felt like Wacky Races with cars, vans etc. overtaking at speed in order to get one car in front at the slip road to the 23. Braking hard once in position causing a domino effect of all other cars braking.

Please can all these drivers take into consideration themselves and others during this time of year as I am sure a majority of accidents can be averted by simply being more assertive and sensible.

Why be 20 years early than an hour late!!!

It that not a photo of the Shoreham by Pass and the slip road to the Holmebush roundabout.
I only ask because the report did not mention tailbacks for this distance?

Living in the real world, Brighton I thought the exact same thing and was a little confused when I read the article, typical Argus!

No, it’s defiantly by the Asda turn off. The bridge in the distance is Ditchling Road.

Tail-gating is an offence, A Gold. It is driving without due care and attention, or dangerous driving or whatever according to the distance between the cars ands the speed.

The problem is that our target-obsessed and useless police are interested only in drink driving and speeding where technology proves the offence and subjective judgement does not come into it.

I once saw a guy on the M1 overtake a line of five 70mph tail-gaters. He was pulled over for speeding. They weren't stopped.

The police have no interest in road safety. They are only interested in stats, collecting fines and winning the competition to close roads for the highest number of unneccessary hours.

tilburyre, That was my point. There is no enforcement on tailgating which imho is at the very least, as dangerous as drink driving and more perilous than some speeding motorists who have wavered 10mph over the limit.

There are cameras and number plate recognition systems in use up & down the country but there is no 'will' to use them against these suicidal maniacs.

Living in the real world, - Good point, well made :o)
