Heavy traffic is still on the A27 in the Falmer and Hollingbury area because of a five vehicle crash.
Long delays are expected as the authorities try and clear the wreckage.
The A27 westbound carriageway between the A270 Lewes Road and A23 London Road has been blocked after the crash, involving four cars and van, at 8am.
Crews have managed to reopen one lane of the road but there is still congestion to the Southerham Roundabout.
A Sussex Police spokesman said the crash wasn't serious.
Fire crews were called and had to cut one person out of the wreckage.
A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said three people were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with minor injuries.
