Two Brighton pubs close

Two Brighton pubs were closed yesterday after the company that ran them went into administration.

The Dyke Tavern in Dyke Road and The Hobgoblin, in York Place, were shut by administrators from Grant Thornton.

The pubs were operated by Pubs ’n’ Bars.

The Dyke Tavern was leased from Enterprise Inns and The Hobgoblin was leased from Punch Taverns.

Pubs 'n' Bars operate three other pubs in the city, the Good Companions, in Dyke Road, the Tamplins Ale House, in Ditchling Road, and The Winner, in Elm Grove, but they have not closed.

Pubs ’n’ Bars has debts of £24 million, mostly due to its bankers.

In the year to June it made a loss of £690,000.

The smoking ban and the recession have been blamed for a downturn in trade which has hit sales and profits at the group, which has its head office in London.

I feel very sorry for the staff. Pubs n Bars Plc have always had a policy of sacking people with immediate effect, including staff who live on site. They did it to 2 or 3 landlords during the time I frequented the Dyke Tavern.
Even though they knew about the administration a day before the pubs were closed, I don't suppose they bothered to tell their employees.

I fear that these closures are the tip of the iceberg, as we watch more town and country pubs close. Passing laws on smoking and prices is all very well, but now lack of choice and job-losses is the result. We never seem to get the balance right in this country. As the politicians seek approving, vote-winning legislation, and the minority tell the majority how they must behave.

When you go into a pub or bar as i did yesterday in Brighton and get charged £3.40 for a pint of ordinary 4% lager then it really is no surprise that pubs are going to close. Yes a substantial part of that is tax and their are overheads and the smoki9ng ban etc etc but I'm afraid the British pub is a rapidly disappearing trade this is but the tip of a very large iceberg. Anyone setting up in the pub trade now would need to be already an established millionaire, completely barmy or both!

I just feel very sorry for the staff of these 2 public houses-Never good to lose your job at any time of the year, let alone at Christmas & to be homeless to, landlords, live in staff. Also the same thing thats happening at Wine Rack, Threshers ect. Once again goverment/eu interference with smoking ban, buisness taxes rising & beer taxes increasing plus the recession are not helping either.

AS EX MANAGERS OF ONE OF THEIR PUBS I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE COMMENTS CONCERNING THE WAY THE COMPANY TREATED THIER EMPLOYEES, THE MANAGEMENT HAD TOTALLY NO IDEA HOW TO RUN COMMUNITY PUBS AND WHERE COMMITTED TO GRABBING AS MUCH PROFIT AS POSSIBLE, I HAVE NO SYMPATHY WITH THIS COMPANY BUT I FEEL EVER SO SORRY WITH PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOB THIS SIDE OF CHRISTMAS

I wish they'd close the Stanmer Park, there was a right ding dong going on out there again on Friday night.
