Brighton and Hove supermarkets caught overcharging customers

Shoppers are being charged the wrong amount at the tills by supermarkets.

Research from Brighton and Hove City Council’s Trading Standards team shows up to half of goods bought from big stores are incorrectly priced.

Every supermarket visited by council officials charged the wrong price for a group of items picked off the shelves.

The results have prompted the local authority to issue warnings to the unnamed chains to price their products properly.

The research, which has been put together over the last few months, looked at supermarkets who failed to match shelf prices with the amount charged at the till.

It showed the worst performing store had errors on 48% of 150 items checked by the trading standards officials.

This included a combination of undercharging, overcharging or incorrect multi-offers.

I think we should know which stores are the worst. What's the point in telling us it's going on if we can't vote with our feet?

The authorities refused to supply the Argus with this information - is that their fault?
I bet you'd soon go on about the argus being gagged if they didn't report the story at all.
Crikey its head you win, tails and argus looses with you :)
Can I also point you to the comments area of any national paper web site - they NEVER allow any unfavourable comment- try it and see!

A Freedom of Information request to B&H City Council should do the trick. The Argus could do it.

The tills are the point of sale and the price that flashes up there is all that matters really. That is why the can't tell you names as they have not done anything wrong.

In response to the comments about naming the supermarkets, I'd like to clarify that we did ask the council for the names, but they refused to give them to us. But Nick, you're absolutely right about putting in a Freedom of Information request - and we are in the process of doing that.

Correct.
Any price on a shelf edge is only "an invitation to buy" and the till price is the point of sale, unless there is a price printed or diplayed on the actual item.
Even if this is so a store can refuse to sell it at an incorrectly priced sum if they want.

One of the few times the law is in oue favour is breakages which they say must be paid for, they can only charge the price they paid for it and not the retail ticket peice

Last month my local S*****urys (name withheld for legal reasons) had a shelf ticket of £3.50 for a four-pack of cans of cider. With a promotional ticket offering two for £7.00.
It was up for about three weeks, despite my pointing it out to staff several times.

our local WHS charges £10 for the Guiness book of records, yet the same retailer, in Cowley, Oxford, charges £15. actual price is £20, so both are at a saving, but why the difference?

In my experience Sainsburys is the worst. Every time we shop there we notice errors on the receipt. They don't get past my missus! Their software needs a bit of work I think.

Wrong. Here's how it works:

The price on the shelf IS an invitation to buy.

HOWEVER

Any store can refuse to sell an item to you at the price, provided they take all the items off the shelf at the time of refusal for repricing. Fact.

I know because I was a manager that did this. Trading Standards were called in and confirmed that I was within my rights to do this. Head Office then went over everyone's heads and pretty gave the customer the product in question. Nothing like backing up your staff.

Yessss, well dodgy supermarkets.
I dont trust them any more.
I'd rather go down the market and give my hard earned cash to trusty blue travelling folk!

what's the point in giving half the story. When the final part has been missed. We as consumers should actually be allowed to know who the stores are. Then we can make our own decision. Stopped shopping in tescos after the way I was treated.

And that's why Tim Sainsbury is not short of a bob or two, didn't granny tell you look after the pennies and so on ?

Yes, alot of the promotions need watching - I spotted one in Tesbury's a week or so ago where the the offer was 2 for more than double the price of 1. I think alot of it is incompetence. They don't update the promotions when the unit prices go up

Simple. Check your receipt, take advantage of under charges and query the over charges.

As for Managers like Forbes Coleman (that got over ridden, hahahaha), probably a Librarian would be a better job for you??
