New sex shop coming to Hove

Hove's image as Brighton's more genteel sister is about to get raunchy.

A new adult boutique selling upmarket erotic goods is about to open.

A banner above the new Taboo store in Blatchington Road declares: “Hove is about to get sexy.”

Owner Tim Robinson has given the shop a £50,000 refit ahead of its opening on January 18.

He already runs a Taboo boutique in Surrey Street, Brighton, and Lust at Gardner Street in the city centre.

The new Hove store replaces the former Ignition sex shop which closed in May. (09) Ignition raised eyebrows when it first opened in 2003.

Residents feared Hove's first sex shop would attract the wrong sort of people to a street used daily by parents walking their children to nearby schools.

But opposition died down after it changed wording on its front window.

The new Taboo has been given a cautious welcome by residents.

Mr Richardson, 49, said he has turned the property form a traditional sex shop into an upmarket adult boutique.

He said: "The fact that the shop already had a licence was a factor in us choosing the site.

"We have spent a huge amount of money on refurbishing the shop and we are a completely different style to what was previously there.

"We already have an award-winning shop in Brighton and we see ourselves as a high end adult boutique, not a sex shop."

He said he has plans to open more shops in other parts of the country over the next year.

Mr Richardson added: "There is a large demand for the type of products we stock.

"Hove has a large catchment area and the nearest shop for them to visit would be Taboo in Surrey Street.

"We thought that a more local shop for our customers who we know already travel in from Hove and Portslade would be more convenient for them.”

More fuel to the argument for Hove to seperate from B & H.

Do you really think our former 'Hove Borough Council' would have allowed such Brightonian brashness by granting a licence for a sex shop???!!!

Keep your sleeze and your bohemian things in Brighton. They are not welcome in Hove.

The Argus is using the names, Tim Robinson and Mr Richardson, should they wake up the retraction and appology department?

and your problem is, exactly???? of course the 'Hove Borough Council' would have allowed it, if they thought is was needed. anyway, ignition had been there quite a while, so i cannot see the objection. HoveAlone sounds very appropriate, hiding behind twitching curtains.

And like caeos says "...its not a new shop, its an existing 18+ shop with new owners and a new name..." - so kinda blows your comment out of the water!
And I live nearby and there's never been any trouble associated with the place; you wouldn't even know it was there unless you looked for it.

I walked past a new shop in Ship Street last week and was gobsmacked to see giant dild** on a shelf in full view of the of shoppers walking past on the pavement.
I wonder what parents think of that or tell their kids.

This is not fun or enjoyment or liberation or freedom of expression or broad-mindedness. This is a sad and squalid industry for people who unfortunately cannot experience the joys of sex without deviant aids.

Dear customer, you should move as close to it as you can, that way you won't have far to walk to it.Who knows, you may even get to be the first in the queue.

Better "deviant aids" than what the Irish clergy got up to !!!! You must be the life and soul of any party. Leave people to what they want just as long as it's legal.

I would hope that parents give an honest and open answer appropriate to the age of the child - rather than run away tittering or ignoring the issue (and thus reinforcing the attitude that sex is in someway bad or dirty).

Rick, I think the question from kids might be: Dad, will my di** get that big or do women prefer plastic pr*cks because we can't measure up?
Maybe that's my own insecurity.

Sex shops sell vibrators, health food stores sell soya products, what's the difference? nothing, they're both meat substitutes! Live and let live, or, go and live on the top of a mountain somewhere and let people get on with their love life in their own way!

It's fine for you to suggest that parents should walk their siblings through a **** shop, but it's not for everyone.Carry on with your swingers view, but most posters here aren't.

My children will know what sex is, in age-appropriate terms, so they will not grow up thinking it is something shameful or dirty. Also then they will be able to recognise if someone behaves inappropriately towards them and will not be afraid to tell a suitable adult or think they themselves have done something wrong.
They will also be able to differentiate between the words "siblings" and "offspring"; clearly you can't. But hey, I'm sure you're giving your children an education to the best of your limited means.
I would hazard a guess that most people who end up with twisted attitudes to sex - and I don't mean people who use sex toys - have had repressed and ill-informed parents who have taught them that enjoying sex is immoral.
