Sussex women missing cancer screenings

Thousands of women across Sussex are missing out on potentially life-saving cancer screenings.

Brighton and Hove City PCT, East Sussex Downs and Weald PCT and Hastings and Rother PCT all screened fewer than 70% of the women eligible for the national breast screening programme last year, NHS figures have revealed.

The PCTs were among only 27 of the 152 authorities in England to fail to hit this target, with Hastings and Rother the worst performing PCT outside London.

Only West Sussex PCT hit the national mark within the region, screening 79% of women eligible.

Just 58% of eligible women between the ages of 53 and 70 were screened in Hastings and Rother, way below the national average of 77%.

The screening programme is a vital step in early detection. Cancer was detected in eight of every 1000 women aged between 50 and 70 who were screened.

I for one look forward to having my chest crushed in a machine. (joking) ..Having said that I 'will' go and have it done because it is so, so, important. I have lost lots of friends through breast cancer, and I also have a lot of surviving friends who did get checked.....so go...please x

What about the supposed rise in screenings because of Jade Goody, who also couldnt be bothered to get screened as it turned out.
